Dear all,

I posted this

http://steelguitarforum.com/Forum11/HTML/008091.html

in the "Electronics" forum, but no one has picked it up there. Basically, I'm wondering what is best - a single coil or humbucking Fishman Rare Earth pickup (and what the differences are)?

Any advice would be most appreciated!

Thanks!

Fred

In my very humble opinion, the humbucking pickup is the way to go. I have tried both, and this one is completely noiseless, and has great range. I have one in my Celtic Cross baritone and am very happy.

Jon has it right about the noise factor, and that is somewhat dictated by the venue and volume you are required to use a pickup in. Playing in bars and such with lots of neon lighting can drive single coil PU's crazy and drive you to distraction. The tonal difference between a STACKED humbucker (which the Rare Earth is) and a single coil is much less and more subtle than electric guitar type humbuckers wich are predominatly side-by-side coils, and therefor sensing a wider string path through the magnetic flux.

How do the Rare Earth compare with Sunrise and the Mag Mic? I've only used the Sunrise's in my weissenborn's.

Thank's, Bill

I had a Sunrise in the first CC I had, and compared the 2 side by side with a friends CC with a Rare Earth and found them to be very similar in sound, having difficulty deciding which sounded 'best'. I'm actually considering swapping the LR Baggs M1 that I have in my Lazy River with the Rare Earth from my Baritone.... I think the more 'acoustic' sounding M1 will suit the bari better. I'll post back when this happens.

Oops... sorry 'bout the double post here... I also tried a MagMic in the Lazy River before I bought the M1, and was not that impressed overall. Once I dialed in the blend that I liked, it would feed back. The Mag alone was comparable to the Rare Earth in a way... basically the 'magnet sound'. Too much money for what you get I'm afraid. Perhaps others have had better success with it.

Thats great info Jon. Any advice on mikes and miking a weissenborn. I've tried a SM57 and a couple of Apex condencer's, pencil and large dia. but have never been happy with the sound. I do like the sunrise to one ch. and the amp miked to a second ch. As much as I like a true acoustic sound, some times I like to add a lot of colour. What could sound better then a baritone weissenborn doing "Mean town Blues"

thank you, Bill
