| On Sunday 6th of August I had the pleasure of seeing and hearing one of my favourite steel players - Mr Corky Owens. He was,as usual,playing with Mr Gene Watson in Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Boy, what a fantastic combination! Corky was playing his new Raines guitar and sounded brilliant, with excellent tone and fantastic picking, he really knocked me out! He played some excellent duos with the lead guitarist. On top of all that, Corky is one of the nicest guys I've met, ever willing to spend time with guys like me and always helpful and willing to offer advice etc. This was the second time I'd seen Corky play, having travelled to Ireland two years ago to see the show. I hope that they can make it to Scotland the next time they are over this side of the pond. |

Corky is one of my favorite People/Players. Gene has always been known to have good bands, and the one he has now is no exception. They are tight, and there twin harmony parts are perfect.
Corky is GWs band leader, and he is also a great guy, and a good friend, as many will tell you.

I started guitar and bass in the early 70ties.
After I heard "Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen" with "Smoke, Smoke, Smoke That Cigarette" on the radio I was infected.
At the same time I got a Chuck Berry LP with "Deep Feeling" on it. Not typical Berry but wonderful.
30 Years later I started playing the non pedal steel.  )

Corky is one of my dearest friends. He is a great player and a great person rolled into one. It's like he was born with a steel in his hands.
I'm fortunate to have good friends that are incredible talents like Corky and Ronnie Miller. Anybody wish they lived in North Texas??? |

I am fortunate not only to live in north Texas, but I am blessed to have a slew of steel players within a rocks throw of where I live, Corky has not only become my steel guitar mentor/instructor, the Corkster has bemcom my best friend. Corky intorduced me to my beautiful wife Linda, and was the best man at our wedding. I must say that the north Texas area is full of great steel players with the likes of Corky, Gary Carpenter, Ted Solesky, Bill Simmons (who is currently on extended vacation in Alabama), Steve Lamb, Buddy Rhabal, and Ron Stafford, and the list goes on.
I wished every steel player lived in north Texas and have the access that I and other steel players that live in this area have. Not only are they great steel players, for the most part they are humble, and eager to help the new guys learning to play steel.
Corky has been a big part of what has kept me playing steel, his encouragement, and his calm, laid back attitude, gives me something to emulate. Corky is #1 in my book. |
