I've noticed Jackie Phelps playing a really odd & weird shaped guitar on several youtube videos...does anyone have a good picture of this guitar?
Does anyone know who made this guitar?
Where is it today?
It's totally bizarre looking.
On the first link you'll see it at about the :47 mark & on the second at the :38 mark

Any info is much appreciated.

That's the single neck version of the Stratosphere, of which Jimmy Bryant was the foremost player/promoter of the more bizzare dbl. neck. |

THANKS RON!!!
That's kinda what I thought...I've seen some similar single neck Stratospheres.
I wonder whatever happened to this one.

I have copies of ssome old Stratosphere ads that Michael Lee Allen sent me (knowing I have a penchant for old guitar ads and catalogs). It looks...and sounds, from recorded examples...like it was a well-intentioned, finely crafted instrument that never grabed the market. I think it was just a little too weird looking for the time.
If you came out with something like that now and said it was made from semi-solidified fibers of organic deciduous, vertically-oriented structural elements (i.e. wood) and bought a booth at NAMM to hawk 'em you'd probably sell truckloads. But in those days, a Tele was still a boat paddle with string lot a lot of people, and the Stratosphere was WAY out in left field.
That'd be a killer pawnshop find. |

The fact that most of them were double necks with the other neck tuned in bizarre harmonic string pairs probably didn't help selling them either. Not everyone was Jimmy Bryant who could just pick it up and play the darn thing. The company came up with some other innovative ideas too; Deke Dickerson has a mid 50's single neck with slanted frets (!!), he says it's actually quite comfortable to play. And some steel guitar trivia; the PU's on the very first Sho Buds were wound by the Stratosphere company. |

It would be a killer Pawnshop find indeed!!!
Perhaps I'll find one right after I find my pawnshop Bigsby, my pawnshop Mosrite Custom like Joe Maphis, my pawnshop Quad-Stringmaster & my pawnshop Rick frying-pan.
HaHaHaHa!!!
You never can tell though...I've bought some darn good bargains at pawnshops, second guessed myself & passed on somethings I shouldn't have & barely missed killer deals/finds my a matter of minutes.
Then again, I've driven long distances for what turned out to be pure junk & wasted alot of time & gas pursuing mystery amps and guitars that were already sold by the time I got there.
I would love to find a Stratosphere guitar for cheap...they're so funky looking & seem to have a decent sound. The fact that they were made in Springfield, MO you'd think that maybe a few crossed the border into Kansas...the search continues!!!
