Can anyone tell me who played steel on "Six Pack To Go" and "Breakin In Another Heart" albums by Hank Thompson? Was it Curly? There's a twofer available but has no player credits on the sleeve, don't you hate that? The pickers are a big part of the music.....Hang on.....they ARE the music.
Cheers, Shane.

The studio version of "Six Pack" had PeeWee Whitewing, the live versions featured Bobby Garrett.

"Breakin' In" had Bert Rivera on steel, his first HT album.

As I recall, Leon Russell covered that and had twin steels... I believe one of 'em was Chalker.

I don't believe that was Leon Russell. I think it was Hank Wilson.

Hank Wilson was a pseudonym used by Leon Russell.

That's correct, Milton. I practically wore out my original copy of the "Hank Wilson's Back" record, which was released back in 1973.

RE:"Six-Pack..."
We had a "sub" drummer last night,(Curt Werner) & he pulled that song "outta the hat",& sang it. That is one of my MANY favorite H.T. songs. The rest of the band wasn't real familiar w/ it & I had to,kind,"cue" them as to how it went. (Of course,I am a "little bit" older than them.) We did real fine until we got to the end,& kinda "blew" the tag line. But,that's all right,'cause I had a ball playin' it again after all these years. (we used to do it in the old band I was with, about 20 yrs. ago,& hadn't played it since.)

" Six Pack " is a grate tune !
we do it quite often ! I don't
think that its that the other guys
like it all that well , Its because ,
I like to play it ! another Hank T
song I like is " Hang Over Hart "
Its Just got that flavor !!!!

Smiley
I still cant get the guys to do the end
right - I end up just putting the tag
on the end of the song and call it good with
a single not run on the -
" One six pack to go " End

Hank Wilson's Back was a great influence for me . Six pack to go was one of the best on that record . I rekon I nearly wore mine out.

I just picked up the Hank Thompson Live From Fabulous Las Vegas and it has this tune on it. Great album with Bobby Garrett. Some real great suff on this album and it has the roulette wheel clicking away on the breaks.

They sure did play tight when playing live.

Well I been a Hank Thompson fan since 1948 or 49,cant remember which, dont guess I ever heard the boy do a bad one,of coure as music progressed I come to like Ole Hank's western swing sound better, with Pee Wee Whitewing and Bob White on the steels,,and as Bob said,,"Hangover Heart" was one of my favoriates,my bro and me use to sit in a bar and drink a cool one and get about 3 dollar's worth of nickels and dimes and play that song till we almost ruined the record,,of course back then,It only cost a nickel to play a song,,I guess if I had to pick a favoriate Hank Thompson song,,It would be "Breakin the Rules",good steel intro, good fiddle and steel break, just a dang good song,,,,not long back at Gulfport Miss, at the "Deep South Steel Jam",I had the Honor of singing a coupla of ole Hank's song's with none other than Mr Pee Wee Whitewing,,I think he played for Hank for about 5 or 6 years,he was with Hank in 1953 when I saw them in Meridian Miss, him and Bob White, ole Hank had a whole bunch of steelers,,think Curly Chalker was one "Wild Side Of Life,,,and Waiting In The Lobby Of Your Heart,,Bert Rivera,Bobby Garrett, and a list prob no one could name,I just know ole Hank is da Man in my book......

Thanks for sharing Tom.I can just see you and your bro sittin in that bar, droppin the nickels on poor old Hank till' he's worn out.I like how songs weave themselves into our memories, like some sort of memory soundtrack. Now when I hear Hangover Heartache I'll see you, your bro,$3:00 nickels and a bunch of "cool ones" woven into a honky tonk memory.I just got home from tonights gig,I'm rambling.Might go listen to Hank.Cheers,Shane.
