I just played a gig at a great music fest in Guelph, Canada.
On sunday there were 4 bands in a row on the lake stage with pedal steel players. And the next bands had guys playing lap steels !
I missed the first guy who was playing an MSA U12 of some sort. Then there was Stew Crookes playing a EMCI S10 who just sounded great. Then I was playing in some improv set up with these Iranian dudes and my band Hem. After me was Mike Castellana playing an old Emmons. He got the crowd roaring after a couple of his solos. He had a perfect steel sound with that twin and PP. The guy can really play no matter what he tells you. I heard there were some other steel players floating around out there also.
Overall it was a great scene. No stupid Dave Mathews type crap music. Just real good bands playing interesting music well.

Vishwa Mohan Bhatt did a workshop that I missed on saturday.

It was pretty amazing in a way. Everybody seemed to know what a pedal steel was and they were into it. I asked the sound crew if it was weird that there were so many steel players and he said, not really. Everybody wants a pedal steel in there band these days.

One thing that keeps coming to mind was that these were not alt country bands that wanted a steel so they could sound authentic. It was more that the steel was being used as an overall musical instrument within some diverse contexts. It was super refreshing to see it.
