Were the Fender Deluxe 8 and Deluxe 6 models basicly a single neck Stringmaster? These guitars have 2 pickups but do they feature Leo's Fender/Blender under the bridge cover. I can't find my old 60's Fender catalog that would tell me. Seems interesting that Fender's Japan division still offers these models. http://www.fenderjapan.co.jp/fender/e_guitar_bass/steel_guitar.htm [This message was edited by Nick Reed on 13 December 2005 at 09:05 PM.] |

Your right on all counts Nick. I have a Fender Deluxe 8 and it does indeed have the blender control under the pickup cover which flips up. I wonder how much they sell for over there. [This message was edited by Andy Sandoval on 13 December 2005 at 09:34 PM.] |

Strange that those Japanese FENDERS are not readily available in the US or Canada. They sure look to be a heck of a lot better than what is coming out of China with the FENDER name ! |

Nick,
I have one and just love it! These are commonly nicknamed S-8 (S=Stringmaster) because the deluxe name is also used on one with a trap pup and several amps.
I thinks Leo liked the "Deluxe" name back then...
These are very rare. Finding a good one may take a while.

Regarding Fender Japan, I think these are "banned" from being sold by retailers in the US and Europe. The reason being that they are too good! The USA made Fenders are the top ones sold in the US and Europe, and Fender Mexico provides the budget alternative. The Fender Japan guitars are MUCH cheaper than the USA made ones, and in terms of quality not far behind (some say even better).
The other guitarist in my band has a Japanese '62 re-issue Strat from the early 90s. It's an amazing guitar!

I agree with you Fred. I have a Japanese tele from 90's and it has a great quality.

May I interject something here? These guitars were sold to the Japanese shortly after the takeover of the present administration due to the lack of sales by Fender Musical Instruments.
Rest assured that Fender Musical Instruments
in Scottsdale Arizona are well aware of the recent popularity of these steel guitars and are readily making plans to once more start building Stringmster D 8 guitars as well as Deluxe 8 string steels. Dont be hasty it will happen. |

Jody-you have given us hints in the past regarding the revival of Stringmasters, etc., presumably from speaking with some of your contacts at Fender-but this post seems to be the most telling information yet!

I'm begging you Jody- don't let 'em do the same thing they did with the last lap steel they came out with!!! What a disappointment that guitar is... |

I thought S-8 refers to "single eight". |

I will be attending the NAMM show and I will offer my comments with regard to your input.
I am by far a research and developement man,I can only offer what I feel should be taken under consideration. And yes Fender is well aware of the Forum. I hear from Sam Marshall (also a steel player) who designed the Fender Steel King. I will do all I can.
Keoki, its good to be back and Im feeling fine.
Thank you all.

Jeff, you are right. The only reason it kind of changed is the Deluxe 8 has trap pups, the "S-8" has Stringmaster pups.
Both are great steels. I prefer the stringmaster only because of the blending.
