I heard this one many times but they play it a few times on XM Radio's "Hank's Place" and I think this has to be one of the steel guitar's classic performances. It's so good to listen to and I think Curly was ahead of his time. His chord renditions are superb and extremely tasteful....Those who have not heard it, "Get R Done".

Carl Smith's "I love you Because" w/ Curly on steel is really great. "Good Deal Lucille" is also very memorable.

I do this as an instrumental and try to copy Curly's version. This is my favorite version of the song.

Interesting thread, i also have Carl's tribute to Roy Acuff featuring Big Jim Murphy doing some great C6th stuff on those songs that were hits for Roy. Jim really got a nice fat tone on that album. My recording is an LP and i have to find someone with a good turntable so i can tranfer it to CD.
Still love those old recordings.

Does any one have an album of the Carl Smith recodings,or any thing else that gives the credits to who the musicians were? I recall about 30 something years ago there was some confusion about who the steel player was. Many thougt it was Jim Murphy and he played so much like Chalker many thought it was Chalker.
Duh,why didn't i ask Jim to clear that up? I hadn't thought of it until i read this.
Any one? Thanks in advance.

In late '69 or early '70, Bill Anderson had his own TV show and when those two songs were still hot, Carl Smith appeared on the show with Curly playing and what an incredible show that was. After the tunes Bill asked Carl who his steel player was and the attention fell on none other than my favorite steel hero. Surely wish those clips were available.
On that double album, both Curly and Big Jim were featured on different songs. On some of the songs Curly played on, Murph played a geat sax also. Murph played a distinctive pedal combo of 5 and 7 together and that pretty much made a noticable difference among a few others such as on the song, "I betcha my heart I love you" or close to it.
