I sure liked Tommy's picking with Vince Gill last night; I don't know the name of the "slow" song he did but Tommy was doing a fantastic on C6th. In fact everyone that soloed was great on that one; seems to me that one would be a terrific seller on a CD. Hey, Vince, "check it out". |

Tommy,
Last night, your solo and fill work on Gene Watson's "Farewell Party" was heartfelt and very creative. Your solo last night set a new standard for how this song is best played. For my money, your playing behind Gene was a Grand Slam!

I was on the way home after a gig at the Moose Club and, as usual, tuned in to 650 AM hoping to hear some steel. Gene Watson sang a couple of good songs, but then Jeannie Seely insisted on Gene staying on stage to sing "Farewell Party". Gene - and Tommy White - were superb.
I have a videotape from at least a couple of years ago (TW was playing a red-and-black Derby) with Tommy playing "Farewell Party" behind Gene. It was a grand-slam then, also, way out-of-the-park!

I missed it too. Sometimes it's hard to pick up 650 here. Does the XM or Sirrus radio carry the GOO? I was thinking I had read where one of the stations were going too.

Sirius caries WSM 24 hours a day. You can listen to the Opry Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday. I like the Midnight Jamboree as well. It's great and also CD quality. |

Hey Tony,
Last week when Russ and Laney were on the ET record shop, I spent the whole hour trying to keep the station tuned in, then remembered that WSM is online 24 hour a day. It was fun though, reminded me of many saturday nights Dad and I went out to his truck to try to listen to the Opry. Hope to see ya in Va in a couple of weeks.
See ya soon,
Jim |

Hey Jim, sorry I won't be able to make it to Va. Maybe we'll get together one of these days. Our local PBS station carried the Saturday Opry from start to finish a few times back in the 70's. I'd love to have those shows on tape/dvd , great pickin'.

Tony,
I was on those PBS shows and I think I have a copy of them somewhere. Shoot me an e:mail or call me and I'll see what I can do. If you have lost my e:mail, it's jimbob1@bellsouth.net. Sorry you can't make the Va. show, it'll be a good one. (And I still owe ya a big cheeseburger)
By the way, as to the original post, as always, Tommy did sound great.

I wonder if Tommy and Paul have ever considered doing a CD together, for example, all time country favorites? I'd listen to that one in my sleep. |

Just saw the post. Thanks so much fellas.
Paul Franklin,
Thank you ..your praise means so much. I've always liked that song and although I've played the solo section many times, I felt compelled to give it some special treatment.
Thanks again,

For Henry, Bobby, and anyone else who would like to hear that performance: you can go to the WSMonline website, and in the lower left corner of the page, there is a link to "Archives". After clicking on the link, select the 4/28 - 4/29 weekend, and click on Grand Ole Opry. The entire 5 hr 40 minutes is there.
You can fast-forward to hear Jeannie Seeley insist on Gene W. singing Farewell Party, and then the song itself - the time to fast forward to is 4:50 of the 5:40 total. As PF mentioned in his posting, both the solo and fills by TW are noteworthy.
Here is my attempt at a link to take you to the page on which you can select the show:

John, Thanks so much for the link.No one loves Tommy's playing more than me. But I guess most of you have gathered that by now.
I've just had time to listen to bits and pieces. Great as always. I thought Tommy's solo on Keep On the Sunny side was really cool. But he always plays cool.......bb |

I like the 1st version of Farewell party the best.Gene did it twice. Try the one at about 1:46....I wouldn't want to hear it played any better....Great Job..Tommy |

Bobby:
Thanks for mentioning the earlier G.O.O. performance of "Farewell Party". Until your posting, I wasn't aware that Gene had sung it earlier in the evening as well,
I listened to that earlier one, and then to the later performance again. I enjoyed them both a lot. Both solos have nuances that make it difficult to choose which I like better.

Tommy was fantastic, as always! One of THE BEST to ever sit down behind a pedal steel, IMO. I'm proud to be able to call him a friend as well as a hero on the steel guitar.
However...was it me just hearing it wrong, or did Gene say "Mr. Tommy White on the FIDDLE"??? Or maybe he said "on the fill"?
