I have a friend named Terry Rigsby who moved to the Cincinnati area ( he is living in Florence KY ) around a year ago. He has been busy settling in with his new job and hasn't gotten around to checking out the music scene yet . I was wondering if someone could tell me where he should go to hear some good Steel players and some good C&W music. Terry is a great lead guitar player and would also like to get back into playing if the right opportunity came up. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Terry Rigsby is a fantastic musician...
A "Tele" player in the true sense of the word.
Some people "have" a Tele..... This guy PLAYS a Tele. There is no way to describe unless you hear him.
I hope he finds something soon - he is the real deal!

Well Bob I lived in cincinnati for all my life, I love it but Country Music it really isn't "hot" like some southern states, however there are 2 pedal steel guitarists, first is the great chuck rich he is unbelievable! he plays at Bobby Mackeys in Wilder Ky. They are only open fri. and sat. but this band is on of the finest in the area, his picken is 2nd to none, and he isn't give'n up any of his secrets! I know chuck and one night the lead guitarist was late for the first session chuck played the lead guitarist's part flawless, and you couldn't tell it was a PSG. Also there is the great Kenny Holicross I believe he is playing at cheyenne cattle com. in fairfield, you may want to call to double check, he is also a very fine player, a profesional, as well as my former teacher one would not be disapointed with his playing thank you carter d10 sho-bud s10 |

Thanks for all the responses. Kenny Holycross used to live in Danville Illinois, arould 30 or 40 miles west from where I live. I always loved his playing. I have an old Peavey LTD that used to belong to him. I saw him at the Chubby Howard Jam a few years back and he sounded great. I also know a bass player named Kurt Hall who, as far as I know, is still living in the Cincinnati area. It would be cool if anyone knows where he might be playing. Mike, you sounded fantastic at the ISGC last year. I'll let Terry know that it would be well worth the drive to hear a steel player of your caliber.
From what I have read so far, I'll definately have to check out Chuck Rich the next time I am out that way, its always exiting to hear great players that you have never heard before. Also, I'm curious, didn't Ron Sweet come from Kentucky a little south of Cincinatti? IMHO, he was one of the best C&W singers there ever was. I used to get to hear him all of the time at a bar in Nashville called Gabes with Big Jim Murphy and Redd Volkaert back when I was living down there. It was like being in Country Music Heaven! I will foreward all of this info to Terry, I am sure he will appreciate it. Thanks again![This message was edited by Bob Watson on 13 April 2006 at 12:56 AM.] [This message was edited by Bob Watson on 13 April 2006 at 12:57 AM.] |

Bob, Ron was born in Somerset Kentucky (I believe) But lived in Cincinnati most of his early life. I had the pleasure of working with Ron for a couple of years in the middle 70's. Great Great singer. The 2 Steel players mentioned Chuck & Kenny Are both working around town. chuck @ Booby Mackeys In Wilder Ky And Kenny works at the Cheyenne a lot.
Kurt Hall I believe works around town with a group called Stagger Lee. They are also at the Cheyenne from time to time. As Mr Sigler has said, he is only a short drive north. Up in Middletown on Saturday night Bill Ersal plays very well. It is called (something Opry I think). A couple of the other players in town Mike Keating plays in the Dayton area & Gary Trego works over in Florence at different places (I think on Dream Street).
And Wayne Hobbs does a single @ a chinese restraunt on either Tuesday or Friday night @ the tylersville exit off of 75 in Ohio about the 24 mile marker.
I don't think he can go wrong with any of these guys.

Hey Jim:
Good to hear that Bobby Mackey's is still going strong. We used to play there about once a year with Gene back in the 70s and 80s. My buddy Dale Wagoner was the staff steeler back then. What a great guy was Dale. I always liked playing that area... lots of fun folks.
Hope you're well.
