I have uploaded another Kayton Roberts clip on YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uw5EUJR1_fA

The clip comes from the Hawaiian Room at the St. Louis Convention in 2005. Enjoy the great music!

Kind Regards, Walter

Man, how good is that! Isn't that L.T.Zinn playing guitar behind him? He said the name of the song but I did not understand what he said.

Yes, that is SGHOF member L.T. Zinn. He is the one who is organizing the Hawaiian Show. Kayton's wife Iva Lee is on piano, our fellow forumite Gerald Ross was also playing rhytm guitar.

The tune sounds so familiar, but I can't think of the title at the moment either.

Kind Regards, Walter

Fantastic! What a monster. He plays with such energy and enthusiasm. He's having a great time and it shows. I Love the boo-wahs with the tone control.

Walter - Really enjoy those Kayton Roberts clips. Got more ???
Does anyone out there know if Kayton's son pursued a musical career? I heard him sing KAHLUA one night on the Opry, backed up of course by Kayton. Both sounded great.

Hi,

Great stuff. It's "Mapuana," a Hawaiian standard composed by Lani Sang and named for his daughter.

Go Kayton!

Furthermore...

I just wish Kayton would learn to loosen up a bit!

When I interviewed him at the FL Folk Festival a few years ago he told me that he bought that steel new in the early '50s and has never played another. There just might be a lesson there.

Thanks for posting these Walt.

Great steel playing on this one. The old Fenders have a sweet tone.

Is it a Fender ? I thought it was, then a few years ago someone told me it was a little double neck made in Nashville many years ago.

All I know, is that it's red. Will try to locate an old photo of Kayton with the guitar.

Walt - hope you post some more.

Did he have his volume pedal outside the legs?

Do many people do that?

Great video, they were having FUN!

I'm playing rhythm guitar on those videos. I also tried to play a solo on Mapuana, but Kayton's wife stole it away from me. Listen you can hear my first few notes.

Kayton Roberts used a Fender Deluxe (I guess??). A double neck non-pedal with trapezoid pickups. His wah wah effect was all volume control pinky swells.

The guy is a total showman and an amazing musician.

I noticed his work with Hanks Williams III.
Awesome musician. It's unbelievable what this guy does with no pedals what so ever.

In August of 1988 I visited Kayton backstage
at the OPRY. He said he recently had his pick-ups recharged, since they were becoming
weak. Not bad for 37 years of playing the same guitar.

I asked Kayton why he had never accepted Scotty's invitation to play at the ISGC? He said he wasn't the "Show OFF" kind of person. Thankfully he lost his shyness.

Kayton's feel and touch are astounding. A lot of people use the pinky volume knob effect well but very few with Kayton's degree of control. The only other guy's I've heard who were that good at pinky volume swells are Danny Gatton & Roy Buchanan on standard guitar.

I believe Kayton said he painted his Fender red to match the Hank Snow band outfits years ago. It's a Dual 8 Professional, right?

Aubrey Ghent and Darick Campbell are not bad at twisting the knobs either.

I have been a Kayton fan since 1970 when I met him playing with Hank Snow at Panther Hall in Ft. Worth Tx. My only question is, why isn't he in the hall of fame. Steel picking doesn't get any better than Kayton Roberts.
