Just got back from the Dallas show!
Not only did Tommy Dodd pick his heart out, and the Nashville and the Texas boys really shined.
Paul Franklin and Reece Anderson did a no pedal set and it was just amazing. Paul then blew the audience away with his single set, then along came Randy Beavers and John Hughey and the three of them just knocked it out. For those who were not there, shame on you, cause you missed a great show.

You can't say; "shame on you", just because we were not there. I am sure there are many forumites who would have loved to have been there. I see you're from Texas, so you'll not have as far to travel as some. There were many attendees from far and wide at the shows. No offence intended, but I think you could have phrased it better.
Glad you had a great time.
Cheers, Arch.

Attendees? Sheesh!

Archie,
I'm sure Tommy didn't mean to come across the way he did. There's a bunch of shows I'd like to attend but schedules, finances and family must be taken into consideration. I'm sure anyone who loves steel guitar would have loved to have been here. I'm real lucky to live in Texas and be able to attend the TSGA show. I hope someday you'll be able to make it.
I'd love to be able to travel to your world. I've meet a lot of people from over the sea.

Roger

Let me say to those who could not be at the show, you missed a great show. I wish we all could have been there. I realize travel and money play a major part in going to a steel show. I only go to the Texas show and only go on Saturday night. My job and a few other factors determine that for me. It sure is not because I do not want to be there for the whole show. If you have never been to the Texas show, you owe it to yourself somewhere down the line to attend. The TSGA knows how to put a steel show together and they deserve much credit for the success just as the players do. Man, I can hardly wait till next year.

This was the place to be if you like steel guitar music and it's players. Everybody there can pick! I mean everybody. All of the performers, singers and players were first class. This was my first steel show in Texas. Guitar displays in the rooms were all excellent. Walk out of one into another one. Great! People from everywhere also. Finally got to meet the folks that are responsible for building my personal guitars. John and Ann Fabian along with Bud Carter. They kept the CARTER room going all day. Good folks doing a fine job. I talked with so many people, players and non-players until I'm afraid if I started naming names I would forget somebody. I'll probably make this a yearly trip from now on. I will mention a few of the high points I really enjoyed but both days were great. So here goes, seeing and talking with Mississippi's best steel player, Mr. Smooth, Bill Stafford. The CARTER room,John & Jean Hughey(always a pleasure), The MSA room, the Ballroom where the performers were especially, seeing and getting hear Bobby Bowman, listening to Joan Cox play for the first time, the displays everywhere(you think of something and it was probably there somewhere), Mike Sigler and finally my biggest shock of the show: Paul Franklin live. I've seen and watched him on TV for years but seeing him live just relaxed and jammin' just blew me away. I couldn't believe I was actually sitting there watching PF. Only two players have ever really touched me emotionally with there playing. Hughey and Franklin. I met John in 71' at age 14 when I first started playing. Then I didn't see him again for nearly 30 years. Then when I heard him at a show in Mississippi it brought tears to my eyes just listening to the emotion and feeling he put into his playing. The same thing happened in Texas with Paul. I was and still am touched by his playing especially on the "Cold, Cold Heart" song. To all of my playing friends here in Mississippi, all I can say is, one trip to Texas and you'll see what I'm talking about. We have a great show in Gulfport but the trip to Irving is well worth it. It's the best I've ever seen.

TOMMY DODD WOH ! He doesen`t spar around he threw knock punches with every line he played . why ? has this man not been a head liner before. TSGA could not have found a better picker to fill that unexpected vacated spot. Tommy Dodd belongs in the top line up on more shows. Please lets hear what you think.

Man!, I didn't mean to make anybody mad.
Thanks to Roger Edington and Sonny Jenkins for knowing what i'm "talkin' bout'"
Jody Cameron which I've known for years and talk to quite often. What a player!!!
Little Jonathon Canler; Magnificent!, and the beat goes on.
As for "Shame on You", just means I wished you could have been there. As for shame on me, I wished I would have seen Scotland when I was in London. Just didn't have the time nor the extra money to do so.
Come to the Texas Show and you will be welcomed. Bye for now.

I understand what Billy said about P.F. I was amazed that he could play non pedal like that, I expected it from Reece, every one knows how great he is, pedals or not. A thrill for me was getting my picture with the legendary Ralph Moony. These folks are not only great players, but very congenial, and good to answer questions and give tips. This was an expensive show, well over four thousand dollars. Of course that includes the beautiful new blue Mullen D-10 sitting here next to me. Had to brag about that a little. I'm ready for the 2007 show now.

A couple of sets that really stood out for me were the Reece and PF non-pedal set, Paul's solo set with Dean Parks (one of my heros), but the award for best performance under fire has got to go to Tommy Dodd. He took the pressure from playing after Paul and turned it into the most positive energy you could imagine (and this with a set that had a lot of boomer pop music).

I wasn't at the TSGA show, but I think Tommy is a great picker. I've played shows with him and I love to hear him play. I even taught him how to play some songs that I've learned. He's a great buddy of mine. Brett, Emmons S-10, Morrell lapsteel, GFI Ultra D-10

Yes, a big man with a big heart. He took his own time to host the international jam in the Peavey room.

Thanks to Mike Brown for the use of the Peavey room. There's few in the steeler's corner like him.

T. Dodd--I have known him for a long time. He is one of the few people I can say I truly enjoy knowing. I can't think of very many musicians who have his level of enjoyment of his instrument and his playing speaks for itself. He does deserve to have a featured spot at any steel show he attends.

The pickin' ain't over til Tommy Dodd has played. He has as much fun playing as we do listening. Tommy is one of the best players out there and is 100% supported by his beautiful Donna. His rendition of " Dance With Me" is a masterpiece. Jody.

Sorry to say I have not got to here Tommy Dodd play live. But I have his CD (In The Steel Of The Night). And he did a knock out job on that CD. A wide range of songs, played with a lot of heart, touch and feel. And he always gets a GREAT tone with his guitar. I agree with all the above. Tommy needs to be on Prime Time at the steel shows.

First of all,let me offer a very humble "Thank you" to those above who made gracious comments about my set Saturday night at the TSGA. I know lots of folks, including myself, were very disappointed when Sarah Jory had to cancel due to an injury just days before the show. (We all missed her very much and wish her a speedy and full recovery.)

When I was first told, er... I mean asked, to play Saturday I thought "cool". More people to hear songs from my new CD. Then I looked at the time slot that I would be filling... I started to shake. Now, I've been playing music a long time but I don't ever recall having to follow the likes of Johnny Bush, John Hughey, and Paul Franklin. What the heck am I doing here? My first instinct was to turn and run. But Paul was very, very gracious and offered some badly needed encouragement. All he said was to be myself and play my stuff, and everything else would fall in place. Thanks to those words, and to a wonderful performance from the staff band (Roy Rosetta, Paul Polish, Mark Abbott, and my buddy Chuck Back on guitar)we had a really fun time on stage. The crowd seem to accept the new/old tunes from my CD and was very kind to me.

I can't thank Albert Talley, the TSGA, and the audience there in Dallas for the extremely warm reception they offered me. I love going to Dallas and only wish I could be a Texan more than just 1 weekend a year. But I'll take it as long as they'll have me.

Thanks again....
