Hey Guys,
Just ran across another fantastic video on youtube.com a couple days ago. (where are these guys finding this cool old stuff?) and was quite pleased, and surprised to hear such great music....AND to recognize a few of the band members.
I am assuming this video, (circa '72-'73) was from a "Hee Haw" show, because I recognized Doyle Holly, on the bass, "Dangerous" Don Rich on the fiddle, and I forget the drummers name, but all three of these guys were "Buckaroos" at the time. (it wasn't Willie Cantu)
Faron was in great form, and at the top of his game in those days!!
But the surprise was to find who i think was Buddy Emmons playing a great turnaround and fillers on an awesome Emmons steel. Actually the camera gives Buddy alot more airtime than I am used to seeing. Very cool.
Am I imagining things or is Buddy also picking with his third finger?? Don't guess i have seen that too much. What awesome sound though....and it happens to be one of my all time favorite Faron tunes.

If you're talkin' about the Hee Haw video, that ain't Buddy playing, though it is an Emmons steel.
Buddy is on the "Hello Walls" video, but doesn't have a solo or camera time. Looks like Phil Baugh playing guitar, probably on a late-80's TNN show.

Thanks guys for clarifying that one.... wasn't really sure, but one short second, the steeler kinda looked up and i thought I recognized that familiar Buddy Emmons "grin"....
Either way, an awesome video, great Faron, great steel work....man, that's cool!!
Two questions tho.... If that was indeed Hee Haw, and the Buckaroos were the backup band, why wouldn't it have been Tom Brumley or Jerry Brightman on the steel?? Time frame here has to be 72-73-74....the only reason I say that Herb, it couldn't be late 80's because Don Rich died in a motorcycle accident in 1973, or 1974.
When did Tom leave and Jerry take over??
Guess I'm not too familiar with Phil Baugh's work....sorry...

| Of course it's a good country song; but I think the guy who is playing steel guitar back up on "Wine Me Up" is doing a great job __ finger tip harmonics are a great effect. |

You are right about Phil Baugh being on the video. He is playing his “Diesel Powered” Peavey T-60. It’s not readable, but the “white strip” on his guitar in the video is actually a sticker that says “Diesel Powered”. I remember seeing him at the Hall of Fame Inn in Nashville with Paul Franklin in the early 1980's and thought how funny he had stickers on his guitar. He had some other stickers too but I can’t remember them all. That night when I saw him play, I kept thinking “I need Diesel Power too”

Look at the right hand on the Wine Me Up video. That doesn't look like Buddy's right hand technique. I believe he cups his right hand more than that.

What time period was Cal Sharp with Faron?

| Just from the right hand it's got to be Doug Jernigan...And he was one of Faron Young's "Deputies" around that era... I'd guess that they mixed in Faron's band with the Buckaroos just for that taping... Doug sure does sounds good! |

| The "Hello Walls" video is from the old TNN "Church Street Station" show, filmed in Orlando Florida probably around 87-89. I played it a few times; some artists used their own bands and some used the house band with Phil Baugh and Mr. Emmons. |

I still have most of the old Church Street Station videos, some of the stuff is now available on DVD also. Buddy is playing with Faron Young, Jimmy Dean, Johnny Russell, but never gets one second of lead camera.
Some of the other featured players are Terry Crisp w/Connie Smith, Tiny Olsen w/Gene Watson, Harlan Powell w/Boxcar Willie and Donna Hammitt w/Porter Wagoner (he used an all girl band at that time!)

| This video of Faron on Hee-Haw was from the program in 1969. The fiddler on the left of Don Rich is none other than Charley Justice of the Jones Boys. George Jones happened to be one of the guests on that particular show too. I think the Drummer is Buckaroo Jerry Wiggins who replaced Willie Cantu and is married to Susan Raye. |

It's Jernigan. Here is an audio clip from another show that makes reference to the Hee Haw appearance. At another place on this tape Faron made introductions of the musicians, mentioning that Doug had recently joined them after returning from Vietnam.

| scott. tom brumley left buck in late '68 or early "69. i saw buck and the band in the spring of '69 and jd was with him then. Well Guys...
After nearly a week, and possibly ten different "for sure" guesses on who the steeler was in that awesome Faron Young-Hee Haw clip...I have just been notified by e mail by THE Music Producer from Hee Haw back in the day...I know you would recognize the name in a heartbeat....but he told me with complete certainty that it was indeed JayDee Maness...... he remembers setting up that shoot at the studios of Channel 5 in Nashville.
Interesting.... I guess i had been convinced that it was Doug Jernigan...that seemed to be the majority consensus...hmmm....hell, what do i know?? to me, at first, it looked like Mr. E.!!!!
I thought the dark hair, and that grin gave it away..... Now I will go thru some archives and see some pix of JayDee from that time frame.....
Oh well....mystery solved. Ain't this group great!!

Hmm, sure doesn't look or sound like Jay Dee, nor does it look like his right hand. The hand surely looks like Doug J. In Jay Dee's bio, there's no mention of his working with FY.
Jay Dee's tenure on Hee Haw was very short in the 69-70 time frame. I think it's time for Jay Dee to verify this story. |

Faron used Doug and Ernie from his band the Deputies. This was a common practice in Nashille to allow the artist to only bring a couple of musicians to play on TV gigs.
