I've played guitar all my life, but never could I do any more than strum--couldn't have picked had my life depended on it!
Why I can pick steel is beyond me (all theories welcome) so although I still strum, you won't see me doing it on a gig.

I used to play a tune on two on the 5 string. But, I don't take it to gigs anymore. I'm way out of practice. I've played a few tunes on the fiddle but looking back, I don't know why. I'm no fiddle player. Worked several gigs over the years on bass.
As for right now, I don't double on guitar but I believe I could with a bit a practice.
I don't think I would like the hassle of hauling all that stuff around or changing instruments in the middle of a show. Probably could get more gigs if I did but I kinda like just being a steel player.

Although I am a medioce keyboard player at best, I used to double on them to do horn, string, organ, etc.. Not much on Piano. I used to play Dobro but went by way of a MatchBro for live playing.
I am now learning mandolin and bluegrass style dobro. Of course, I don't play live any more.

Tried Banjo failed terribly, Still have Dobro and lapsteel but my main instrument of choice is the Pedal Steel. This and the lapsteel has been the only thing I was able to play and make it sound good. Ok sound like something approaching good. LOL

Bass player, trying to learn steel, tried a fiddle once, but they physically took that away, and said if I ever touched one again, they would kill me. So far I am still alive.

| I am in the same boat as Mike. I play steel only when I go out and play. I did try the fiddle at one time but someone thought I was killing a cat so I let it go. I will play bass guitar if there is any steel swapping going on. |

I play only pedal steel. It is the only instrument I've ever played. Might try dobro or a six string someday.
