My friend Doug Jones loaned me a DVD of Joe Wright, recorded in 2003 I think. I was absolutely blown away by his control, style and obvious mastery of the instrument. I'm a little confused. I don't understand why he hasn't got a lot more press and recognition. Thoughts?

Joe Wright is an excellent teacher, a fabulous player, a riot as a performer, and a really nice, approachable, down-to-earth, and witty guy. I had the pleasure of attending his clinic and seeing him perform at the Mesa show recently. The show was terrific and so was Joe.

Maybe because he doesn't have a recording contract? Steel players everywhere know he's one of the best in the world. It seems that he's virtually unknown outside of the steel community, though.

Mike, I recommed you find the video he and Sarah Jory did in Australia. Joe is a super player and the comedy is just a plus.

I hate to invoke the name of Robert Randolph again, but I feel the need to. Like Robert, Joe is a guy that could have used the steel to transcend the instrument to another level...at least as far as perception is concerned to non-steelers. Joe could have taken the instrument and made it a legitimate rock instrument and been at the front of the stage. The guy can play rock mucic with the best rock guitarists out there. I would love to here him onstage with a band like Van Halen, or Metallica and just listen to what could happen. I really think the guy could have been a rock star.

Maybe RR could invite Joe to play on tour with him and expose him to a wider audience, How 'bout it Robert?

Craig, that would be a heckuva a one, two punch. I'd pay to go see it.

Did I hear this correctly? I was listening to XM Radio a couple weeks back when the steel caught my attention. Joe's tone on his Sierra is somewhat unique compared to most of the studio work we hear these days. I thought it had to be Joe pickin'. I was busy painting the room, but I could have sworn that the DJ on Hank's Place said it was Joe Wright-- not playing steel, but the singer on the recording. I can't recall the tune, but it was damn good honky tonk country. I'm guessing it was probably something Joe wrote too.

Can anyone help me on this one? CRS is setting in.

Well I'd like to say this about that....Joe is by far a great one. Also if Joe had the oppertunity to do what RR is doing, he could wow the crowds.

Ron, I would say that is possible. I heard a Justin Trevino song on Hanks Place Saturday night as well as some Dale Watson and Johnny Bush. Where are the XM radio studios by the way?

I've heard Joe only two times at the Gulfport show and the first time he played "House of the Rising Sun", going from the meek to all out Rock distortion. Last Saturday he put on a show for real and played "Sweet Home Alabama". He plays so many parts and sings at the same time. Sounded more like the lead on the record than the original. I purchased his "Rock" CD last year because my wife thought he was the best player there. (I also thought the same). (Getting her attention at a Steel show is a major event). I could only listen to it one time as it was WILD. Dont know how anybody could play the things he did, no matter how out of the world it was. Hey Joe, can I get a trade-in on a once played CD for a Charlie Pride one?

That's just what I've been wondering since I heard his work on "Mr. Record Man" from the "Operation Russless" CD that I got from Russ and Laney Hicks.

It's good to know a bit more about the man - those of us out here on the upper left edge of the country don't get to hear near enough of the heartland pickers (although Doug Jones DOES seem to have his ear pretty close to the ground, but I don't know how he does it). Of course, we've got our own Harley James to keep us mystified so at least we're not entirely deprived of forced humility.

This I gotta see! Where can this video be purchased?

I recently bought some Joe Wright instructional videos. Very helpful and informative.

XM studios are in New York City. A Google search may get you the address. They may even give tours(?)

I have seen a number of postings where Joe gets praise and wonderful reviews of how well he performs or entertains. I wonder how many of us who love Joe and his playing and performing so much would book a facility, advertise a Joe Wright Concert, sell tickets and pay Joe a very reasonable fee for such a concert. I have heard Joe do a one man show for 3 hours and hold the crowd from 9 till midnight. Maybe we should all do that and book Joe for the year.

Quite possible. In concert, about half of Joe's repertoire is vocal, accompanied by his own steel. He seems to be able to separate the two tasks at will - part of his brain plays the steel while another part sings. There's no cross-talk - he literally sounds like two different musicians at once. He doesn't even look at his hands!

There are a lot of steel players whom I admire and respect. Joe Wright, in my opinion, is the most entertaining steel player I have ever witnessed and he is also a master of the steel guitar. He is also a very humble man to talk with. I can't say enough about Joe.

He still can! Let's incourage him to do so. Joe's a young guy, with a lot of life left in him.

Mr Smoot: XM Flagship Broadcast facilities are in Washington DC and a smaller facility at the CMHOF in Nashville, with studio space in NY for some special broadcasts.

John Daugherty really summarized the salient points about Joe...If there's ever a super-bowl of steel players, Joe will be the equivalent of "John Elway"!

gotta love Joe Wright. I great player and a born showman. I agree Joe is under-rated as a serious steel player. No telling what the future may bring. Joe has the talent to keep it interesting.
