Just curious...Anybody ever lost it and clocked somebody with your bar? I haven't personally, but I did threaten a lead guitarist who thought he was getting paid by the note...

Not the bar, but I have kept my left leg on my steel unscrewed to where I could take it off with one turn at a few rowdy clubs I played at. Came very close to batting practice a few times but was lucky to just use my common sense and joking personality to avoid any serious confrontations. Guns; knives; drugs and prostitutes were the standard at a few of the choice places I played at but what a blast we had as I recollect.

i would never dram of doing something like that. but then again i play in different churches and there is not much roudieness going on there except raising of the hands and a bunch of shouting and praising god. there has been a few sinners in there, maybe a few with a drinking problem, and there might have been a prostitute or two in there too hard telling what kind of croud this psg playing will attract. but they're not mean. doc

Many years ago we played a show in Port Hood, Nova Scotia. Big brawl broke out and I had to use my Tele as a bat to keep from getting my butt kicked.

I don't think I'd throw it, I'd just hold it in my palm and punch the daylights out of someone. [This message was edited by Mike Neer on 27 January 2006 at 10:23 PM.] |

Mike, I actually did put my bar in my hand and hit a guy who would not leave me alone. I was young and dumb then but it did a lot of damage and it only took one shot. I don't recommend it though....unless somebody bothers you hee hee hee |

I've clocked a couple guys by holding the bar inside my fist. One drunk guy who kept falling over on my steel and a singer who kept jumping around and crashing into me. I gave the singer a charlie horse so he limped over to the other side of the stage to finish the show. I clearly warned them both twice about exactly what I was going to do. I'm not a big guy at all but if you hit somebody like you mean it with a pedal steelbar in your fist its lights out.

I had a cop take one away from me cuz he thought I might do just that. He gave it back to me. Not the brightest cop I ever met. |

I'm having thoughts of you guys that play in church thowing a bar at a sleeping parishener, or a boring preacher.
I'd never throw my BJS. I like it too much.
Our guitarist throws picks. |

What kind of bar do you guys recommend for this?
Do you prefer chrome or stainless? I assume a dobro bar would be unaceptable.....
As a related topic....what gauge string is recommended for strangling, and which brand do you recommend?[This message was edited by HowardR on 28 January 2006 at 05:02 AM.] |

re Bob H: yep, a big lug fell into my horn too, twice in 5 minutes. Although I didnt launch the bar directly at him, the noise it made when it hit the concrete floor was very similar to a gunshot, with much the same crowd reaction...a$$es and elbows flyin'.
Havent KO'ed anyone with it though since I was 16; stripper using my guitar as an accessories table...biker boyfriend rather upset about it....WHAM!! and darkness on the face of his earth LOL! damm handy piece of gear, imho
ps, Al U, that was at Mr Harry's..remember that joint?[This message was edited by Mike Cass on 28 January 2006 at 05:54 AM.] |

Yes I did throw my bar at a guy. He was our bass player and he had a gas problem. I told once more and he'd be eating steel. He did, I did, and it never happened again. That was at the Barn in Sanford Fl. about '92 or '93. |

In my younger days I wouldn't have dreamed of using a Stevens bar to play with but I always carried one in my pocket for emergencies. It works twice as good as a roll of nickles in your fist. |

Way, way back I used to play bass in some pretty low places and I took to carrying a hatchet around in my gig bag. It didn't seem to matter how big or how drunk the patrons were - everybody really, really respects a psychopathic ax murderer. |

If you are the type of player that is really into throwing your tone bar and your arm is in the 85-90 mph range, then the John Pearse Thermo-Cryonic Tone Bar is a must! The damn things are harder than chinese arithmetic!
I have dropped mine several times on a concrete floor without damage.
Expensive, but if you have the means I highly recommend them.
