Congrats Jerry D on your award. I'm sure it was well earned and I know it was deserved.

Wow what an honor it must be just being nominated for such a thing.

Back on topic,- I really look forward to getting the new Douglas CD, his playing is always equally inspiring and scary.

Jerry Douglas' latest is "The Best Kept Secret."

I had previously bought "Lookout for Hope," and while I was amazed by his skill, I never really connected with the music. That's not the case on "Secret" -- he really extends his boundaries, playing more lap steel and getting vocals from Allison Krauss and John Fogerty, plus instrumental support from Derek Trucks, Bill Frisell, Sam Bush, Bela Fleck and ... Howard R! (Howard's National New Yorker is prominently featured in the jacket art.)

Even if you don't connect with a lot of "Lookout For Hope," Jerry's version of "Little Martha" is worth the price of admission.

As a hard practicing pedal-steel player with developing experience I wanna speak out my admiration to those great dobro-players out there.
I am just working trying to record some halfway decent dobro tracks on one of my demos right now, with next to no experience what so ever.
I thought pedal-steel was tough (or just forgot how steep the learning curve was at the beginning). These tracks kill me. I wouldn't have imagined that it was so difficult to play this thing (open e-major)

BTW it's not a good idea to warm up watching the Allison Krauss & Union Station DVD. It's hard to play something even remotely useable after watching and hearing Mr. Douglas tearing it up

Caught JD with AKUS last night at the NJPAC (NJ Performing Arts Center). Of course the news of his selection as Musician of the Year the night before at the CMAs was announced by Allison right after the opening song. JD's solo spot was fiery to say the least. A medley of 3 tunes - Lil' Roro (off Best Kept Secret and named after the rap name taken on by one of his son's friends), Little Martha (simply a beautiful rendition that would make Duane proud) and finally his signature Monkey Let the Hogs Out. Needless to say he received a standing ovation. The rest of AKUS are outstanding musicians in their own right but JD is prominently featured on just about every tune. Not sure what reso he was playing but it didn't look like a Scheerhorn or his signature Gibson model. Perhaps a Beard or Guernsey (sp)? He switched between two for most of the evening but had a nice selection of others sitting on the stage. Truly the contemporary master of the instrument!

My Douglas favorite is Skip,Hop&Wobble. Amazing playing by a grossly talented trio, several styles covered.

I was looking for the guy in the hat last night at the AKUS show but alas, no one had such fashion sense!
BTW Howard's NY'er makes a great looking skyscraper in JD's Best Kept Secret CD tray picture.
