That was great. I believe it will air next Sat here in NYC on CH 13. I had the pleasure of hearing Jon last week in town. It was pissing rain that night and I asked if the twin he was playing was the house amp (they have a decent one) and I know what a treasure his rig is. But no, he looked at me like I was from Mars for suggesting that he would venture out without the tone machine, rain or shine. Playing a Pro 1 that sounded really good. |

Enjoyable.
I like how the steel guitar made its presence known throughout the entire song.
Very good. |

I watched the whole show last night. Quite honestly, I think the steel playing made the show, but of course I'm biased.
It was such a pleasure to see the guitar players leave real space for the steel, and to have that space so nicely used. I've played guitar a lot longer than steel, and it's not that I don't love lead guitar - I do. But it's about balance and beauty, and this was much in evidence. |

I loved it as well. The sound was superb. I hope they release the entire unedited performance sometime. They've done that for a few other artists. Was Graboff playing through two Twins? |

For those in the Portland area (and possibly other places around the country): The Ryan Adams performance on Austin City Limits airs this coming Friday, January 27th.
For some reason, our local PBS affiliate delays the ACL episodes by a week compared to some other cities.

What's that guitar... a Fessenden? Whatever it is, it sounds pretty great...
Okay, got it -- it's a JCH... that makes sense. It sounds really, really good, and the operator is not too shabby either! :- )

Here's something odd and wonderful that happened to me Saturday as I thumbed through the TV stations. First I see the Bellamy Bros. singing Redneck Girl live for a rehab benefit. The steel player was great and prominent. Don't know who he is, but he was playing an Emmons. When that song was over I hit the remote to Austin City Limits and there's a close up of a steel player, and he sounded great. That's right, I saw 2 steel guitar players within seconds on different stations on TV in North America. |

Hey everybody, thanks for the great feed back on the ACL gig. The show's sound people really seem to know what to do with a steel guitar down there in Texas!
The bands stage volume is usually quite loud so I use two Twin Reverbs so I don’t have to push them too hard. For recording, I use my original ’65 Twin outfitted with a single JBL K-130 15” speaker. I don’t take that baby on the road so I use 2 of those new “custom” Twins with 15” speakers. However, the ACL taping as a one off show so they didn’t ship my amps but rented a pair of black face Twin reissues with the standard 12” speakers for me. Sounded pretty good…
My “secret weapon” is the Electro Harmonix “Holy Grail” pedal attached to the right rear leg of my JCH. I can just reach down and adjust the effect amount. Here’s the key… I use the spring reverb in the amp (I love a good sounding Fender reverb) and use the Holy Grail on the “hall” setting. The combo sounds huge. No other effects. Steel to the Holy Grail to the volume pedal to the amp. That’s it.
I’ve included some links to 7 video files that some fan posted on line. I believe these were all the songs aired on the show but I’m not 100% sure because I haven’t seen the show yet. It airs in my area on the 27th. Thanks again folks and I hope you enjoy the videos.
I've removed these links because they don't seem to work anymore!?! Sorry to those who tried repeatedly to view them. JG[This message was edited by Jon Graboff on 27 January 2006 at 07:11 AM.] |

Great playing Jon. "A Kiss Before I Go" is an incredible song. I've about worn out Jacksonville City Nights, and I've only had it about a month. Your playing on that CD is fantastic. It really sings out pretty. When is the band coming to Florida? My wife is drooling to see you guys. If you're not coming down here, we'll hang out when my wife and I stay in our place in the East Village.

Use the Quicktime player instead. Only thing is these files sizes are GIGANTIC!
No need to be so huge. That's why I stick with
the Windows Media Player....good quality and
reasonable file size.[This message was edited by Jay Ganz on 23 January 2006 at 07:13 PM.] |
