| The one with John Wayne and Lee Marvin. Its a slow instrumental (key of A)thats played in and out throughout the movie. Beautiful touch. Anyone know who recorded that? Thanks |

Freddie Tavares for sure..
I was just told by the most knowledgeable person re the Tavares Bros. Lorainne Lewin.

Hey CC it's not me.. I'm just quoting Lorainne... she is without doubt the foremost authority on the Tavares Bros..Sometime I must post the Bio and discography.. MOST comprehensive.. she even has handwritten charts of the pedal set-up and MUCH memorabilia..

There is NO question as to who played on the film soundtrack .. Lorainne has spent quite a few years researching the Tavares Brothers. I can't see why when a question is answered definatively, that there continue to be disbelievers ?

After reading Dave Mayes comments, I decided to look into this matter further....In fact the steel playing in the majority of the music IS as Lorene Ruymar stated, Barney Isaacs Jr.
But both John Marsden and myself have identified the link music player as being Freddy Tavares.. presumably because the links were orchestrated and Freddy was a pretty good reader, whilst Barney didn't let things like that harm his playing !!
So, in a sense everyone is right....great playing by both of them.. well worth buying the DVD for...
As for Lorene's book, there is a review of it and Andy Volks in the current issue of 'Aloha Dream'
In Lorene's book, take a look at the caption on page 61 (Billy Hew Len picture)!!!
My Sub-title would be "maybe he's playing Come FRY with me"

John, I'm sitting looking at the complete bio of Freddie and Ernie Tavares. I have hand written notes about the copedent and the pedal mechanism Ernie designed in 1947, articles from the Honolulu Star Bulletin August 1947 about his "New Invention" and much more. I will post these and some rare pictures later this week when I can find time.
In the meantime, to answer the question,
Freddie Tavares played the orchestrated pieces presumably because he was a good reader, and the rest was Barney Isaacs Jr.
Freddie's tuning at the time was E-C-A-F#-Eb-C-A-F# (similar to his brother's but a whole step up from Ernie's six string tuning of D-Bb-G-E-Db-Bb
and he was playing a Fender 1000. whereas Ernie played a guitar he made himself |
