Saw Gary P. Nunn New Year's Eve, and was sure missing Danny's steel. Having been a guitar player for years, I don't see the need for two electric guitars in the same band, and no steel. Gary plays more than enough guitar for the band, and without the steel, or even the keyboard he used to have, there is a consiberable "hole" in the music. Oh well...seem's like nothing good lasts very long.
Anybody know what Danny is up to, these days?

Danny is my closest friend for 32 years, my fishing buddy, my former employer when he owned a music store in the 80's, he's followed me into a couple bands, etc. I talk to him 3-4 times a week.
Right now he's freelancing, playing with Pauline Reese some, also a kid from San Marcos named Paul Eason, another singer named Brian Turner, what have you. He's a pretty popular player right now around this area.
He's also finding himself becoming a painting contractor, a career he kind of backed into when gigs were slower. He really doesn't want to go to housepainting full time (he is 54, after all), but the money is real good and he hires younger guys to get up on the ladders.

Thank's Herb.
I'm glad to hear that Danny is doing well. Yeah, painting and drywall are two things you can always make a buck at if you're good.
Did he tell you why he left Mr. Nunn? Everything was just starting to gel real good.
My son is living in Austin, these days. So now that I have a reason to go there, I might get a chance to catch some of you guys, out and about.
Thanks again,
Les

Stu
Danny unwisely got rid of the Lloyd Green about 10-12 years ago. He's currently playing an SD-10 Legrande through my old Evans amp.
No email either. But interestingly, his son Chase Hawk, now 19, is becoming a HUGE mega-star in the world of BMX bicycle stunt-riding. I mean, worldwide magazine articles, covers of big-time magazines, product endorsement contracts, more.
Danny talks all the time about when Poodie, Schroeder, Josh Dubin, Debbie Erwin, and him all lived off Oltorf. I do remember some good times we had over there.
Didn't you live over there also?

Ah yes, Austin in the 70's! We did have fun, didn't we, Stu? I remember the first time I met you, at the Austin Opry House, with Wild Bill and the Buffalo Yankees.
Yes Ricky... Chase is "da man..." (sort of, I mean, he's still 19 after all )

Good ol' Danny and Chase - They lived across the street from me for a few years about 10 years ago. Danny built a big old ramp on his already steep driveway for Chase to practice on. Stupifying what he could do on a bicycle.
Saw Danny a few weeks ago in Target and got the latest news on Chase. He also told me about moving on from the Gary P gig and seemed pretty happy about it. A unique and very tasteful player.
PS - For awhile there back 10 years ago I had
the makings of several great bands all on my street (or real close by) including both Marty Muse and Danny Hawke on steel, Chris O'Connell on vocals, Ted Hall on guitar, Tom Clarkson on bass and Ernie Durawa on drums. We just never played all together at the same time. |
