Thank you Jay. Norm Owens wrote that song in about 15 minutes. Many times those quickies are the best. Norm passed away in 1999. He was a gentleman and very good country singer. He was my "bestest friend".
btw, the harmony was sung by Joni Mosby of "Johnny and Joni",piano by Clyde Griffin,lead guitar by Gene Davis.

I worked as a bouncer in Johnny and Joni's Ban-Dar Club in Ventura, Ca. back in the late '70s. Haven't heard about them in years. I did hear that the night club is gone. Are they still performing?

John, I haven't heard from Johnny or Joni in years. Maybe someone can help us with that.
I played in their place in Ventura right after it opened (1960?). They offered me a job there.
If I remember correctly, Mooney worked there a short time until they could get a permanent guitar player.

John,
I've listened over and over (at least 30 times) to" Lately" , what a nice reminder of when I was fancy free! By any chance, do you remember, exactly, what your exact tuning was on on the Fender? I'm asking because a long time ago, I tried my darndest to get some of those lovely steel guitar sounds, remembering, I think, I got about 2 or 3 licks.
It's to late for me, now,but, what was I missing back then.

Jay, that was a long time ago. I'll try.
The tuning was an 8-string E9 with the 1st string being a G#.
Pedal#1 raised 4th string (G#) to A.
Pedal#2 raised 4th string (G#) to A and 3rd string (B) to C#.
Pedal#3 I am unsure of. I know it raised 1st string (G#) to A. It also may have raised 3rd string (B) to C#.
Pedal#4 raised 2nd string (E) to F#.
Although I am unsure of pedal#3, I know my tuning was exactly the same as Ralphs tuning at the time (1961). He later made some changes.
The lick you are referring to was played as the ending on the first take of that song. When Johnny Mosby(in the control room) heard the ending, he asked me to work that lick into the song at every pause in the vocal. Johnny then suggested the piano/steel trading a similar lick on the ride. The song was recorded at Goldstar Studios in Hollywood,CA.
I didn't have a reverb unit at that time. The reverb was provided by the studio (probably a large room with a mic and speaker in it). It is hard to believe,but we did not wear headphones. We heard everyhing (including the reverb) through monitor speakers in the very large room we recorded in. Mics were placed very close to the amps,drums, piano,etc. Feed back was not a problem.
Recording techniques have changed a lot since then. (What an understatement).

Hi John,
Thanks for the reply. I know it was a long time ago, but you gave me what I was looking for.
Back in the early 60s, the West Coast style of steel playing, in my opinion, did a great deal in bringing C&W in the limelight. Buck Owens, Johnny & Joni, Wynn Stewart, Tommy Collins and others were all on top of the charts with this "new" steel sound. Faron Young had his album "Fan Club Favorites" with several cuts trying to get your sound, with not much (in my opinion) success.
