My band was playing at Billy Bob's last night and I got the pleasure of getting to hear a guy I have always known but never really grasped what a player he is.
Joe Ely was the headliner and Lloyd Maines was working with Joe playing his Mullen
S-10 and I have to say he is one tasteful player to say the least. The last time I had ever seen Lloyd was back in 1999 with the Chicks and their music never truely showcased his ability.
Classic tone and licks to the bone is how I best discribe Lloyds playing last night. It could have only been better if I'd had a moment to meet him but our band went back on immediately after they ended their show.
Well maybe I'll get to meet Arty Passes (I hope I got your last name correctly)when he plays with Kevin Fowler tonight. [This message was edited by Dick Wood on 31 December 2005 at 11:05 AM.] |

Lloyd sure sounds very fine (as always) on the "Ten in Texas" compilation.

I have what I think is THE BEST Nathalie Maines story ever---I don't care for her so it's in that vein. Lloyd is great but I don't think the daughter is "all that" by a long shot!!

WHY WHY WHY would anyone try to turn a very positive thread about a great steel player into a negative one about his singing daughter. She is NOT the subject of any of this and shouldn't be, this is about "steel players and their music"!
One more reason why so many great players want nothing to do with this otherwise wonderful forum, in my humble opinion of course... |

Lloyd is one of my favorites. I still have the Maines Brothers LP from about 1979. He has played some great stuff on lots of peoples records - like Dale Watson's first CD. I also have the "60 Hot Licks..." video - some cool stuff.
I'm with Pete on this - I just don't see what Natalie has to do with it. |

I've only seen Lloyd playing S-10's, or SD-10's. Does he play C6 at all? GREAT player, no matter!! |

Lloyd plays C6 on non-pedal steel, and quite well indeed.
Lloyd hired me to play non-pedal on Wayne Hancock's first album Thunderstorms and Neon Signs. I was setting up a Fender Dual Professional at the studio and Lloyd came over and allowed as how he had one like that sitting in a closet for decades.
I told him he ought to haul it out and try it. It'd be easy for him, I said.
Yeah, right. I was on half the album, and guess who finished it up, and was hotter in the mix?
I laugh about it, 'cause Lloyd's been one of my good pals for about 30 years. I occasionally work on his pedal guitars.

I love Zumsteels too! I play a GFI, but I love Zumsteels. I've seen pictures of Lloyd playing a Zumsteel and a Mullen. I wonder what guitar Lloyd plays more-Zum or Mullen. I'm curious to hear those licks. Brett, Emmons S-10, Morrell lapsteel, GFI Ultra D-10 |

Does anyone know if Lloyd is back gigging regularly with Joe Ely, or if that Billy Bob's show was just a "one-off"? I saw him countless times in Texas with Ely in the late 70's and early 80's; what a great band that was!
