It was a joke Ben, meant for the amusement of those who've been reading this forum way too long.

Oh, and his major contribution is that he played steel on Crosby Stills and Nash's Teach Your Children Well.

My guess is the most recognized steel riff by the general public.

OK - "Scrap Heap of the Uncool", "Why are we moving backwards", RR, and now JG. All we need to end the year in a flurry is a nice juicy debate on ET vs JI.

PS - PLEASE - NOT! I'm joking, or as Johnny Carson used to say, "Around here, I need to diagram my jokes".

Darryl, ET and JI stand for Equal Temperment and Just Intonation. Two methods of tuning a steel guitar that can create more controversy than just about anything else on the Forum.

Don't listen to him! ET stands for Ernest Tubb and JI stands for Judas Iscariot, and they have nothing to do with each other!

Maybe Garcia's biggest contribution to steel was not claiming he was a great steel player. Somebody met him and said he was very self-effacing about his steel abilities.

Now, back to working on JETI: Just Equal Temperament Intonation. One standard for all!

"Yes, do a search. This BS isn't needed anymore."

-well excuse me for clutering up the board with BS. I did your precious search and (other than one mention in an unrelated thread in 05)the last time Garcia was mentioned was in 2002. Gee..that topic has been beaten to death here i see, you all discuss it regularly, daily even...how dare i ask without searching thru all the three year old threads first?

Thats okay, I guess i knew it wouldnt be a popular question....

Now, you all can go back to debating wehter some guy in a jam band playing blues licks is gonna be the death of your instrument and wehter or not UPS is at fault for the broken guitar you received packed in a wet paper sack

Hey Ben do another search. Jerry Garcia's incredible gift to the steel guitar community has been mentioned a few times just this yea. Maybe try another search in pedal steel. Hope you get the answer to your question and don't mind the bears around here. They're all bark. Happy New Year!

Technically, he may not be the world's best steel player.

But he is the best artist in the world.....
