Go to www.jerrybyrdfanclub.com and look in the "Ray's Page"......
Is this a pedal steel? Could it be done on anything other than a pedal steel? Wasn't "speed picking" the result of the high speed flexibility of the pedal steel guitar? This does require high speed right hand technique does it not?

Definitely not. Sounds like a C6th Hawaiian tuning to me.

No. "Speed picking" is done by the player, not by the guitar. (Another post has some "speed picking" on a ukelele, only 4 strings, and certainly no pedals.)
This does require high speed right hand technique does it not?
Yes, of a moderate fashion. I hear some 16ths, but that's about it. No 32nd or 64th note clusters here. Still, it's great playing!

I've heard Bobby Black tear up "Rocky Top" on a lap steel. Jerry Douglas can probably match speeds with Doug Jernigan and not break a sweat. Speed picking is a technique than can be mastered on any plucked instrument.

That recording sounded old enough to pre-date pedals anyway, that's part of the reason I was confused.

There were two cuts of New Panhandle by Smokey Rogers and the Caravan. I've got the other one around here someplace and when I find it I'll post a link. Same arrangement, but different solo by Murph.

STEPHAN: It was a Smokey Rogers "Coral" label from the early to mid-1950's. I was always amazed how far he could get away from the original written tune and still come up each time with a knock-out chorus of his own.
No gimmicks or gadgets.......just talented playing with basic instrument and technique. |
