I'm starting out on my dobro. I've been playing pedal steel for years and have always favored the 1" 12-string bar (even though I play 10 string tunings).
My initial "sit-down" with the dobro found even the 10-string 1" bar was awkward feeling on the neck so I'm gonna switch to a smaller bar for the dobro.
My question is which is the recommended direction - Stevens or Shubb, or stick with a bullet bar like a 3/4 Dunlop?
Your help here is welcome and appreciated.

Ricky take a look at some of these. Dobro Steels I like my Shubb-Pearse II Steel for playin dobro. It's got a rounded end like a bullet bar and a nice flat edge on the other that's good for those clean soundin pull offs associated with a lot of dobro playin.

Ozwald and Clarence Jackson used 3/4 inch bullet bars. Bev King and Mike Webb still use bullet bars. Most of the other Big Dogs on the dobro use Sheerhorn bars and a couple others of similar design. In the proper hands they all work. Billy |

I highly recommend you use a smaller bullet bar, especially if you want to do any slants. I like the Bill Brozman "Brozophonic" (you can order it from homespuntapes.com)

I highly recommend the Scheerhorn bar for Dobro: great for hammer-ons as well as slants. I prefer the bullet bar for lap steel, however. I was never too impressed with the Stevens bar. Try several and see which you like best.

I move the bar around very fast when playing the dobro, so a pedal steel heavy bar does not work for me. Favorite is the Shubb-Pearse as described in earlier reply. You can hang on to it.
Most of all, develop you own style!
Thanx,
Jim

The Scheerhorn bar is an engineering marvel for Dobro.
Or, if you're on a budget, a Dunlop "Lap Dawg" is close. |

I would recommend the Scheerhorn bar; it has more "heft" than a Stevens Steel. Mike Auldridge, as far as I know, prefers the Stevens.
A machinist friend of mine made my bars for me and they are perfect, at least for me.
Despite what anyone may tell you regarding bullet bars, you CAN do reverse slants with a Scheerhorn or Stevens bar. Just ask Mike! |

I would recommend a bar custom made for your grip. Wood handle, therefore, non-slip http://www.gssteels.com
he can make a bullet tip / stevens combo for you
No slippages, less chance of a bullet bar becoming a bullet and shooting in to am audience mebers eye, no pesky law suits |
