| what's the story with the above bike, is it a Gold Star? Very nice!!!! circa? I did a similar look with my 68 TR6, small seat, mostly back fender showing, small pipes, no battery, kind of a big mini bike |

Jim,
Yes, that is a 1963 B.S.A. Goldstar Catalina Scrambler, or whats left of it, LMAO!
It had no battery either, just a Lucas Magdyno unit. The pipe is off a Clubman. You had to be very careful kicking that bike, it could really hurt you in a backfire!
The head light was an old VW backup lamp, two bucks at the junkyard! I can't believe I was such a cheap bastard!
A saw a restored bike just like it that fetched forty grand not long ago. BTW that bike was originally owned by Andy Pelc, a B.S.A. dealer in MI, he raced that bike in the Jack Pine Scrambles in MI during the 60's.
I was such a punk back then! Riding a bike wearing Tony Llamma's! That shiny belt you see is a chromed three row primary chain off of one of my old H-D's. I saw a guy wearing one just like it at a rally last year, I guess good taste is timeless! I must say though, that belt got me out of a few roadhouse tussels!

Did Mann ride a Goldstar? I had forgotten all about him, great rider.
In the sixties the Gold Star was the bike to beat on the 1/2 mile dirt track.

| John, if my memory serves me correctly Dick Mann won National # 1 plate at the end of the 1963 season riding primarily a BSA Goldstar. A couple of years ago at the vintage races in Ashland, Ohio he had a Gold Star flat tracker assembled and never been fired. It was offered at the auction on Saturday night with an opening bid of $30,000, no takers. I was pretty close to that scene during those years wrenching on 750 HDs. If you haven't seen the video "On any Sunday" by all means get the new CD's that are now available, you surely will enjoy them. Ohio and Michigan were certainly the hot bed of flat track during those times.If you were into that we could spend hours bench raceing from the old days. Sammy Tanner was also a very successful Gold Star rider, Al Gunter, Jody Nix, Dick Klanforth, if I would sit and think awhile I could probably continue the list. Where has our youth gone. On Any Sunday, yeah!! That's a GREAT film.
$30-40K for a Gold Star, well I love the old bikes but that still seems ridiculous to me.... but then, what they're paying for old guitars is too... it's sad that the things we enjoyed not that many years ago and bought used for a few hundred bucks are now rich-man's toys. Guess that's just life.

| Jim, If you haven't seen the new CD set get them for sure. Its a real hoot to see the racers now and listen to their stories. This one I have to share. Evertt Bashsere (spelling) out of Texas would look under his left arm when coming out of the turn onto the straightaway instead of looking over his right shoulder to see who was behind him. Soon some of the younger riders had adopted this style, one of them approached Evertt and told him how easy it was to see who was behind and liked the way he did it. Evertt replied, " Hell, I am blind in the right eye and can't see over my right shoulder, I have to look under my left arm." A lot of people on the circuit never knew Evertt only had one eye. Walter,
I grew up in MI, I lived not far from a BSA dealer that also raced the Goldstars on the flat track. His name was Larry Stone.
There were several H-D riders from up there, Bart Markel, Rex Beauchamp, and I believe Jay Springsteen was from MI.
I used to watch the races at Northville and the Detroit Race Course. Great sport!

here you can see our ride. Eva and dog Hogan are sharing the HD Classic sidecar. Nowadays Hogan is fully grow up and has always dog Sally with him.

Hey John,
I just talked to Bobbe and we may want to go for a ride to the Loveless this Sunday.Are you interested?What a question,I`m sure you are,give Bobbe a call and lets have a good breakfast and nice ride on Sunday morning.I got pulled over by a cop last week for doing 85 in 70 on my 158 hp Kawasaki,I told him I was in the first gear but it didn`t help..  ,so I had to go get my motorcycle endorsment today,now I`m legal,I guess if it wasn`t for that I`d never strait that up.I still have to go to 2 hour traffic class.Let us know what you think.And of course if there is any bikers who would like to join it would be great.I must say that we always had a great time riding.At least I did.
