This year at the HSGA Convention in Joliet ...

I was approached by a gentleman who wanted a 25.5" 8 string Dustpan ... but he wanted it in "Black Wrinkle" (after seein' my "Black Beauty" Boobpan).

I was more interested in makin' the auction a success ... than gettin' the retail price ...

So I told him to bid on the auction steel ... and I would take it home and "wrinkle" it ...

... "On the House" ...

Here it is ... ready to ship:

So ends my "Summers Work" and Big Dust is sure happy 'bout it ...

Enjoy John ... it's headin' to Pixar Studios in the mornin'.

Man, that is one sweet, clean lookin steel Rick. How did you apply that finish on it or is it a "trade secret"?

No secret ...

I had to apply an "acid etch" ... then a primer ... then the black wrinkle paint ...

To wrinkle properly it had to be heated to 200 degrees F ... for 12 hours.

I had tried the local auto parts wrinkle paint ... but it was "less" than desirable.

I found that Masarati (sports cars) ... carried the "real deal" ... so I got it from there. They had black and red.

It was my "tribute" to Ricky A25s ...

Hal Smith's "Dick McIntire" was black wrinkled ... My A25 was cream wrinkled ... I believe Mike Scott's A25 is black wrinkled ... as is Dirk Vogel's.

My 1938 D14 has a cast aluminum body that's black wrinkled ... with bakelite necks.

Gerald Ross took me to Elderley ... the day before the convention ... and all the "repair guys" had their way with my various Dustpans.

The guy who is doin' the "Duco" finishes ... for National Reso-Phonics ... came out and looked over my Boob ...

He liked it alot ... and then brought out some ukes that he had been experimenting on ... Duco wise ... to show us.

Lots of fun ...

Nice work Rick. The guitar looked great shiny and "naked" and it looks even better now.

Yep, Rick impressed all the repair guys at Elderly. I took Rick to the store the day before HSGA Joliet 2005. I used to work at Elderly so I know all the folks in the store and the shop. I called ahead to inform them about what was showing up.

The repair guys there have seen and worked on just about every vintage holy grail stringed instrument we covet and salivate after. When they saw the 6-7 Dustpans (and took them into the back room for closer inspection) they all came out of the repair shop and crowded around while Rick held court. There were a lot of smiles and animated conversation and everyone wanted to be Rick's friend.

A fun day!

I guess that's one way to keep Big Dust in place. Doesn't look like he's going anywhere with that pan on him like a paper weight!

Although it looks great in pics, the pics don't show the total beauty of the black wrinkle. In person, it really is visually outstanding. When I first saw the boobpan (in black wrinkle), I couldn't stop touching it!

The gentleman who requested this wouldn't happen to be John Anderson, would it? He purchased a lap steel from me a few years back, and I got a free tour of Pixar Studios as a result. That's a very cool place to visit, and I'm sure it's fun to work there as well.

Nice job, Rick!

Howard ... I have photographic evidence of your "affection" for the Boobpan ... ... so easy on poor ol' Jeff ...

I like the wrinkle so much ... I decided to keep the Black Beauty for myself ...

Well .. unless someone whips out their checkbook ... and "makes me an offer" I can't refuse

8 strings ... uggg ... I took off two

Rick, a beautiful piece of artistry. Still, I have a couple of questions regarding the 8 string design. I notice a sharp angle from the 4th and 5th strings to the nut. Won't this cause more string breakage, tuning problems, and nut wear than a straight line. Have you considered modifying the headstock shape to allow a straighter string angle?

Also, won't the integrated aluminum nut groove out very quickly with steel strings running through it since aluminum is softer than steel? Just some observations. I love your work and wish you continued success.

.

That may be an aesthetic observation ... but as far as mechanical ... I have no problems with that angle.

It holds a tuning very well ... and I ain't busted any strings yet ...

This "paddle" headstock was the modification ... again, aesthetically.

My original 6 and 7 stringers have "snake heads" ...

I also have mothers with an "A" frame headstock ... to be poured empty in the middle ... for up to 12 strings, I guess ...

Scarey ... I don't like the "feel" of 8 ...

Anyway ... the paddle was originally ment to be slotted ... but when I tried casting in the slots ... naaaaa

I wasn't good enough with my mill (just got it for this batch) ... to get it done before the convention ... so I went with the B6 look.

I drew up a slimmer verson but it didn't look right ... to me anyway.

No ... not enough to off-set the benefits of the integrated nut/bridge.

In my opinion ... thats the single most important thing in the design.

It is A356 aluminum alloy (which is heat treat-able) ... but I haven't seen the need.

Plus they are "monster sized" ... every 5 yrs ... you can sand them flush ...

You'd still be good to go for 50 yrs ... then when I'm history ... you can sink a steel blade in ...

Thanks for addressing my questions. I really admire you for showing us the development of these guitars in such detail.
