On XM Satelite radio there are dedicated channels for 50's and 60's music. On these channels they play "stingers" like top 40 stations used to back in the day, with highly orchestrated big band flourishes and then a Talking Steel guitar announcing "60's on 6- X-M" in classic Son-O-Vox style. These have to be recently produced, and they are perfect in their evocation of that style of self promotion. My question is:
WHO IS THE STEELER? Someone is doing fabulous work in a classic style here and I need to know who it is! Is it a forumite?

wow---I can hear in my head those promos:
"monday....tuesday....wednesday....etc....WABC"
It has NEVER occurred to me that those were talking steels but I never thought about it. Is that what you are saying or are you just referring to the XM tag? Now that I think about it I can't imagine how else it was done. wow.[This message was edited by Jon Light on 24 November 2005 at 09:40 AM.] |

Those radio ID. jingles were recorded by a company called PAMS in Dallas Tx.. The successor company to PAMS is called JAMS. JAMS operates a PAMS tribute website. On this you can see the Gibson Console Grande that was used for the Sonovox. |

I did some "talking-guitar" jingles for WWVA radio,in Wheeling,W.V. back in the mid 60's. I wish I had copies of them today.

The Who Sell Out was the only Who album I ever had--not a fan--and only now that you mention it do I remember those fillers. Yes!
This is an amazing revelation for me--and here I thought that talking steel guitars were useless diversions. Never would have imagined they were a part of the sound track of my youth. Go know. |

So who would have played such things in England back then? Were the ones on the Who album (which I bought at 12 years old, in '68 when it came out!) recorded for the album or are they actually "Radio London" IDs... I always wondered that... they were BBC/radio london id's from Dallas TX as far as I've been able to determine, maybe custom made for the who but I doubt it. PAMS did jingles for a world wide market in the same styles... |
