I just got my December issue of Guitar Player magazine and there is a very interesting article about Steve Kimock, his Fender Lap Steel and Justly tuned 3rds & 7ths. Also an article about forum favorite Jerry Garcia and a quote from Jerry: "All musicians go through a phase where they're fascinated by technique or flash. Love of music eventually smoothes all that out." hmmmm...now there's food for thought!!

John, are we to think that Jerry didn't like music then? His tecnique never seemed to "smooth out". I think his statement explained it all.
I wonder if he really meant that.
I find this funny. However, I was around him at several award shows in the late '60s and found him to be very very humble around players he respected. A very nice personality.
Wish he was still around, a fun guy. |

Bobbe, I'm still chuckling at your comment here. You hit the nail right on the head and quite humorously too...
I think I should have titled my post "Technique & Taste" (not technique vs taste). My take on working on techncal aspects of playing, is to give a great deal of time & effort to methodical technical practice. But then when it comes time to perform, live or recording, that becomes secondary, transparent, and exists to serve musical taste and inspiration. And in light of a goal to advance one's technical knowledge and ability I thought Steve Kimock's "master class" in GP was quite helpful in clarifying this sometimes confusing tuning issue. |

I read Garcia's statement as meaning that people can be impressed by the flashiness of amazing technical ability, but that there is much more to music than just the flash of technique. For example, in the world of electric guitar, many listeners may be blown away by the technical ability of a super fast shredder, say like a Yngwie Malmsteen (no offense, Yngwie!), but eventually the same listener may find that a simpler player, like a John Lee Hooker, may have more to say musically. Bobbe, I've read a lot of nice things about Garcia. Miles Davis talks about him in his book, and says tthat he was always impressed about how much Garcia knew about Davis's own music and jazz, and how humble and respectful he was. Too bad about all those burgers and herion, they're really killers. Just say no to drugs and fast food. |

Steve Kimock is a friend of mine from when we used to work together at Mesa/Boogie some 20 years ago. He's also one of my favorite rock steel guitarists. He has a fine grasp of modes and tunings and, of course, one of the best rock tones in the world.

Bobbe-I hope you were referring to Garcia's often maligned steel playing and not his guitar playing.

the new CD by the Steve Kimock Band, "Eudemonic" is now on my "CD's to Buy" list. Along with Jay Farrar, Live in Seattle w/ Eric Heywood on pedal steel; Martina McBride's "Timeless"; Mike Perlowin's "West Side Story"; Tom Morrell and the Timewarp Tophands CD, "Monkey Bizness" with "Swingin on a Star". And my wife and I are planning our annual holiday season outing to have dinner out and see a performance of the "Nutcracker"...I will not be bored or in a "rut"....

Mark Eaton, yes , of course. And I think Jerry would agree with me. Jerry's respect for me when we'd meet knew no bounds. He treated me nicer than I deserved. He never rerfered to himself as a "steel player" in any conversations we ever had, short, few and far between.
John Ummel, you again, have greatly impressed me, will you ever stop? Ha!
Your friend
