| Irina & I watched the CMT Top 100 Duets Special yesterday evening. There were live performances of the top 12, some performed by the original artists. #1 was "Islands in the Stream" and Kenny & Dolly sang it live together for the first time in 15 years! Dolly is so full of enthusiasm, just great. Travis Tritt and Patty Loveless did Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man... nice job. Waylon's son 'Shooter' along with Montgomery Gentry did Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys. This was a BIG live production. The backup band was only sometimes a little visible behind the 'runway' stage. The steel was impeccable on every song, perfect intonation, cutting through crystal clear with beautiful tone. Once there was a camera on the player's hands but not his face. I wondered out loud to Irina, Who is it? I watched very carefully when the credits ran at the end of the show and...yep, Tommy White. I shoulda known. Man, what nice playing in a challenging sitaution. Tommy is truly a great player. John, if you hadn't already started this thread, I was going to.
First of all, I must confess that this kind of show isn't my cup of tea - it's all too flashy for me.
But I happened to switch channels just as someone or other was singing 'Jackson', and was mesmerized by the steel playing. I didn't know who it was, but Tommy came to mind immediately! Of course, after that I stayed tuned and listened to evry note he played, and my suspicions were confirmed in the credits.
Tommy, if you read this, please know that I think you exceeded even your high standard, especially on that song! Those fills reminded me of why I love pedal steel so much.

I too sat there watching and wondering who was responsible for such impressive steel work. It all makes sense now...thanks Tommy!
The show was actually quite enjoyable as they chose from an array of songs both old and new. I'm gonna try to catch a re-airing of it and record it. |

The music part of the show was very good (Tommy especially!), but I can't abide those video clips where the 'celebrities' get to gush about how so-and-so represents the heart and soul of country music (and so on, and so on)... Add that to the 30% of air-time given to commercials, and you end up with about 15 minutes in the hour of actual music. Still, that's TV, I guess.
It really was a great band, though, and I'd like to tape it, too, so I can woodshed TW's licks in 'Jackson'!!!

After the first couple of songs on the show, I told my wife, "that has to be Tommy White playing the steel". Although they never showed his face on screen, I knew it was the king playing. He stayed true to the original songs, but added just enough Tommy White licks to make it sound just right. When I saw the credits at the end of the show I was delighted to see that I had been correct.
In my opinion, Tommy White made the show. One question though....on the one screen shot of his hands, I thought I saw a Sho-Bud, or where my eyes deceiving me? |

| I caught the last half of the show. Tommy White had me glued there for the rest of the show. Tommy played excelent and was dominate on most of the songs and up in the mix too. |

Tommy,
saw the opry a couple weeks ago and you were backing up a newer band with a female singer..I don't know who she was..but it was a fast song and YOU WERE ON Fire!!!.The only reason I watch the opry is to see you and the rest off the 1st team picker's. It was great to see Lloyd on a couple of weeks ago too!
See you in Legion Hall on the 1st..hopefully.
