I'll bet they saw it coming (unlike federal disaster aid) and beat it to St. Louis early. |

Hello All,
To my disbelief, and delight, Bill wrote to me personally to let me know that he is allright, but that his home is pretty much in tatters. He has intermittent phone service and thus intermittent Web access, but nevertheless, this great man and steel guitar giant took time to write to let me, and thus you know that he is putting things back together. From his note, it sounds like it is hard to comprehend the devastation there, it is so complete.
Yet another reason why Bill is to be admired, I hope that he will take me up on my offer to help him in some way, be that a donation, some cables, strings whatever might be of help in this difficult time.
My thoughts are with all who have suffered as a result of this terrible disaster. |

I just this minute got off the line with Bill and they are in good shape. Some damage to the outbuildings. Pumpkin, the horse, is ok and so are the dogs. The power people were on the poles at his house hooking up the power and he now has telephone service.. He found the line to his house snapped, and he spliced it back together and "caramba" he had dial tone. He may be able to get on line shortly to the Forum. He wanted me to tell everyone that everything will be fine. The Army Corps of Engineers are using the VFW building to sleep in, but he said they would somehow manage to have the OCT 1 meeting if at all possible. His comments included the fact that RJ Buras and family suffered some house damage, but RJ is very busy with his trucks and FEMA hauling off all the damaged property along the coast. All this good news in this household, and he assured me if he needed any further assistance he would let us know.

Garland,
I had the pleasure of having dinner with the Staffords Sunday after the show in St. Louis. They are two of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet. They said they were fine, and they also asked me to tell you "hello". I was going to wait until you were out of the hospital, and I guess you are if you're at the computer! I hope everything is going well for you. Anne and I have you and Jean in our prayers.
Love Ya Man!

Fred,
Thanks for the input. I won't call Bill because I know he is busy cleaning up the mess. It's great to know he and Betty are alright -- as well as the horse and dogs.

I had an email forwarded by Bill this morning, so he must have some access to the web. It was a relief to hear from him.

As an aside, I've had Bill Stafford's works mentioned to me as someone I need to listen to. Is one of his albums solo steel, the 'Idaho' soundtrack, maybe?
And how about a source for them? |

If you can't find his CDs anywhere else, do a search on his name here on the Forum, and send him an email. He may be having communication problems right now, but normally you can get one directly from him. His latest one is all solo steel. He has the best jazz tone on steel I have ever heard. |

WOW, you guys have certainely humbled this ole steel wannabee player. Thanks so very much.
Garland, I certainely hope you are home and doing well now. And if you guys love Jerry Byrd's playing, you will be most impressed with Garland's. He is one of the very few with that special "Byrd Touch". When I first heard him in Saluda, it was immediate that "here is another special man and steel guitar player". I am so priviledged to be in contact with all . Thanks so much.

Charley, if you ever get a chance to hear Bill playing solo, he will amaze you with his knowledge. When he plays a chord or note he knows it will be correct, and why. He played "Got a Letter From My Kid Today" for me, the prettiest, fullest chords I ever heard. I thought he was using nine fingerpicks! His cd's are really worth having. Bill, so glad you are ok after the storm.
