I like to hear your input on this. I just bought a used 15" JBL and the tone on it is darker than my other 2 JBL's. The speaker really puts out but I'm used to more highs when I'm pickin on stage. Here's what puzzles me. Throughout the years, I always had a high, clear sound on stage and I usually got compliments on the quality of the rich tone. When I used this newly bought speaker, it's stage sound wasn't near as clean as my other speakers, but, the band leader turned around and commented on it's tone after I did a ride. The guitar player, who likes highs, praised it and the sound man at Billy Bob's really liked it.? My wife, who I have trained to listen to the tone etc, liked it a lot. So, what I'm hearing on stage isn't what's projecting to the audience. I thought I had it all figured out after all these yrs.? |

Ted;
I doubt anyone hears identical to anyone else. It’s all in the ear(s) of the listener! (inside~joke) I wouldn’t worry too much about it. If you’re satisfied with your sound, that’s what helps you play better. Carry on!

If that speaker had a lot of bass notes pumped into it, the cone will be softened,and it will lose some high frequency response.
I played with a bass player who had an amp identical to mine. My amp had never had a bass played through it. I could tell a world of difference in the sound of those amps.
After that lesson, I would never let anyone play bass through my amp. |

Ted,
You don't mention which model the speaker is. You imply that they are all the same model. Is this true? If not, there would definitely be some difference in sound. A D130 is not the same as a D130F, for instance.
Also, it is important to note that severe impact (such as might occur from dropping) to any magnet will affect it's magnetic properties -- if it is old enough and has survived such an impact it would be significantly less efficient, particularly in the high frequencies.[This message was edited by Dave Grafe on 27 July 2005 at 10:27 AM.] |

Dave, the speaker really humps. A sound man told me that it depends on what kind of driver was installed in it does make a difference. But what does puzzle me is what everybody else is hearing is different from what I'm hearing? They say it's clear as a bell where it sounds more on the dark side to me. Another words, Chalker would have loved this speaker. |
