Mr Perlowin, i notice in your profile you list your interest in order of priority as.."Sex, Drugs, Steel Guitar"... now, i have never heard you play sir, but according to The Steel Guitar Hall Of Fame, you would never be inducted either..no matter how great you played, and what tuning, or style you may have created!

How many more records does a SGHOF member sell? How many more sessions? Endorsements??
We all have our personal favorites, but I think HowardR hit it---let's give the award to the guy who makes the plaques! |

George, my "sex drugs and rock and Roll" line was an attempt at humor. However much it may be in bad taste, nobody in this community can say I ever stole a dime from them. We all have our faults, and we can overlook many of them, but not stealing.
Not withstanding all that, I don't deserve to be in the hall of fame because I don't meet the qualifications. I'm not that great a player, and I certainly haven't made the kinds of contributions necessary to receive that honor.
It's true I never met Julian Tharpe, but I know 2 highly respected members of our community who both told me that he ripped them off.
Since I am not on the nominating committee, and as b0b points out, it's not a popularity contest and we have no say in who gets in or not, it doesn't make any difference.
But for whatever it's worth, I believe the two guys who told me Tharpe did not deal with them honestly, and I think that the members of the nominating committee do too.
If they see fit to either disbelieve this or ignore it, then Tharpe will be inducted. My guess is that they will not.
Either way it's out of your and my hands. |

There have been some great players mentioned here that may never make the Hall Of Fame. All that I am aware of that Sonny Garrish has ever done has played and recorded for years. I realize he stays out of the public eye and is not a member here but his accomplishments speak for themselves. I wish we could put a lot of things in the past aside and honor some of these men for what they have done for the steel guitar. I guess we will find out when September rolls around. |

sorry Mike, but i don't see the "Humor" in your profile. I guess i'm missing something here. Again you can choose to belive whom ever you wish. But i will stand by my statement, that you do the entire steel guitar community a disservice by repeating such garbage. And it reflects poorly on yourself as well. I would think you could better serve our Forum, by more worth while projects, and less bad taste attacks on individuals. Again calling someone a thief, who you have never met or talked to is in poor taste anywhere in the world, not just this forum sorry...by the replies here that i have read..you stand alone.....

Slandering someone always makes a difference to the loved ones of the person you are slandering...
Seems to me there was this young rebellious fellow who hung around Nashville, drank, i'm sure did drugs, didn't show up for playing dates, ran around with women while he was married, i am sure beat someone out of a few bucks, if even for a bottle of booze, had a radical style, and conducted his life and dealings in a less then appropriate manner..they told him he didn't fit in..and even threw him off the opry....umm who was that now? ummm Hank somebody...

I would go with Reece, Julian,Winnie, and Sonny. As far as personal past let us not forget that some of the guys in there now were not angels and had their own snakes to kill. Yet we loved them anyway. I think we should let God decide about the good and bad instead of us, and somehow those guys need to be in there. |

I'm with Skip Edwards - I think it's an embarrasment that Sneaky Pete Kleinow isn't in there already. He's influenced more younger steel players than half the guys on the list put together. But he's apparently just not "conventional" enough for the conservative powers that be.
Which kinda goes to show the value anyway. |

Well Mike, bless Jeff Newmann's heart. I can't help but like people that tell it the way they see it.
Not everybody likes it, that's for sure.
Oh Well.

Maybe some day people that have, or have been percieved to have, ripped off other players, or sued the crap out of their fellow craftsmen for stupid reasons will have these percieved "transgressions against the community" overlooked in the light of masterful instrumentation.
I'd give it 30 years or so, when the wronged respondents, and those ripped off, if so, are long gone.
It's just our flawed, human nature I guess.
There's a certain water color artist of the latter century that might have gotten more recognition had it not been for his particular political misadventures...
I thought Sneaky Pete was "in" already.
If not then Winnie and Pete.

After reading most of these post on the HOF subject, I tend to continue to look at the positives I can learn from on each player that's listed as a possible HOF inductee. Only two per year. That means next year they'll be two more inducted. In the next five years that's ten. I believe that down the road in the near future most of our great steel players will be in the HOF. I'd like to think that the negatives that have been and are mentioned about great players will fade away in time but there music will live on forever as long as there are steel players like myself around to continue playing there music and promoting the STEEL GUITAR! |

Lot's of 'enquire magazine' stuff written here about Julian Tharpe.
I knew the man...I worked with the man...I promoted concerts pitting Julian against some of the best great jazz guitarists in the world....I talked to all of them and everyone of them told me how amazed they were with Julian's playing..
Not too many steel players could ever hope to get that kind of respect from those great musicians.
Yes, Julian might have been a little fast in his personal life but he was also a little good in his musical life.
No, not a little good....a lot good. He was head and shoulders above 99.9999999999999999 per cent of the steel players today.
George Redmond mentioned Hank Williams Sr....Is Hank Williams in the Country Music Hall Of Fame? How long did it take the Hall Of Fame to honor him?
Maybe they had to put Hank in the Hall Of Fame because of his fantastic career, forget his well written about personal life.
Well, I thinks Julian Tharpes attained that status in his career and he deserves to be elected into the Hall Of Fame no matter what he did in his personal life.
Probably about 100 per cent of the nay sayers would give their left whatever to have the talent that Julian had. Enough said about his qualifications.
Rest in peace, Julian. You won't get me to show stupidity and jealousy by putting down one great musician.
My opinion is that there isn't one of you out there that are cutting Julian that would have deserved to carry his guitar case.

Richard and Jim, you are unfortunately correct! you are wasting your time in regards to Reece.. i have it in writing that Reece has been...for better word "Blackballed" from the nomination, and induction system of the HOF. I am willing to send a copy of this letter to anyone who request it. Not only is an injustice being done here, that is unfair to all of us that take the time and effort to nominate. But i believe that this ONE person has "Corrupted" the board, so a "Fair" assessment, of Reeces's accomplishments, cannot be done. I am looking at this situation, very very carefully. I promise you, and all my fellow steelers around the world..i WILL not surrender, or be intimidated, untill i get to the bottom of this once and for all. I AM NOT accusing ANYONE of being unethical, dishonest.."YET"! let the truth be known. I have requested, documents, and information, that is available to us, under the law. I will have this request, presented, under order if necessary. This directly effects us all. And i like many of you, demand answers. I have said it before..i will say it again.."Something is not right in Mr Andersens Case"...I will use my own resources and i am not asking anything from anyone. Insight is always welcome. But that's it please...Also DO NOT write Reece in regards to this matter..WRITE me...This is my investigation, i take full responsibility for it!....And PLEASE keep nominating Reece...i will second any nominations or assist you in your quest. I will be glad to pass along any and all information and progress i make in this situation. After all Reece is a friend to this Forum, and a friend to us all...God Bless this man, and his work. Which was demonstrated this past week-end at Bobbe's Slide Off in Nashville..Your encouragement is appreciated..your gripes as well...sorry it has come to this..I will take this one step at a time, i will not forget Julian, Mr Burley i promise, and i will also look into what dirt they have suppose to have dug up on Gene O'Neil......

Each of these guys get or got a vote to induct this year, and pasty years, inductees.
IT'S A MAJORITY VOTE. What don't you people understand about this? One man cannot keep a canidate from being inducted.
JEEZ!!! it's not to hard to grasp!
Here's an example:
If there are 8 votes, you need to get 5 of those votes(at least) to be inducted. By simple mathematics, one can deduce that there would have been 3 people that voted against induction, and, as we all know, 3 people is not 1 people. So you can now plainly see that it takes at least 4 people to vote against an inductee. Therefore, one man cannot keep an indictee out of the SGHOF all by himself.

To Mike V. from Concord, Ca.-- I'd like to thank you for the lesson in 'simple arithmetic', but for fact that you didn't start with the proper basics. There are a couple of folks you listed that won't be voting this year; our good friend Jeff Newman and a stalwart steel guitar supporter Winnie Winston. May they rest in peace. Then sir, that makes only 6 people involved providing Scotty has not appointed two replacements and the Board approved of them. Yep, that's how they are picked and surprisingly they probably are there for life.
Here's a couple of quotes from your post that another fellow from Concord Cal has made on this forum several times.
"One man cannot keep a canidate from being inducted."
"Therefore, one man cannot keep an indictee out of the SGHOF all by himself."
I'm really not surprised that they're back again. I also think it pertinent to put up Myron Labelle's answer to the above;
"One vote can't keep anyone out..... (word omitted) ....A lot of people use the same toilet. It only takes one %$%#$le to plug it up."
That's probably how a bunch of us feel about the situation as it exists.
The Steel Guitar Hall of Fame, Inc is privately owned and was incorporated in 1984 in the state of Missouri as a 501 (3C) corporation. It has a board entitled "Steel Guitar Convention Board." This board meets in conjunction with the ISGA convention in St Louis annually. There is a lot of confusion with the title of the board because it is NOT a part of the ISGA, and why it is so named is beyond me. If you want to get to the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame on the internet you have to go through the following:
http://www.scottysmusic.com/abouthof.htm
Several think that a real Hall of Fame would have it's own website, but remember it's a privately owned corporation and the owner can do what he wants--and rightfully so. The public has no right to tell the owner what to do. Right?
But who supports this privately owned entity? The steel players, manufacturers, and customers. If queried, the man on the street would probably not have a clue as to the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame, its location, what it does. Matter of fact they probably wouldn't even know what a steel guitar looks like. In spite of this fact there is no input into this corp. except for the nomination process from its supporters--rightfully so, it's privately owned. And this is the biggest joke of all, IMHO. An individual has to be nominated and a letter written to have one's name submitted, and that is rightfully so--the owner wants it that way. Is it possible that the person who has the best letter written on him is inducted? Gracious, if the Board Members who do the induction process don't know who deserves to be in the HOF, what in the heck are they doing on the Board. Who knows, all sessions are closed and rightfully so--the owner wants it that way and it's written into the bylaws.
In short,if you want to change the methods, then you better start your own HOF and do it like you want it. I have a letter from one of the officials of the SGHOF that, in essence, states that very thing.
Reece Anderson and Julian Tharpe----If left up to one of the members of the board, will never be inducted into the sanctity of this organization. He has stated so, publicly, not once but several times. So be it. He's only one vote, but his influence has to be felt throughout the entire board. He's seen to it. Both Reece and Julian have been publicly held up to ridicule and judgement passed on both of these gentlemen by whomever.
It would appear to me that someone better ask Reece if he even would accept the nomination after what he's been put through for the last 2 and 1/2 Decades. He just might not be too interested in "the honor". Someone might be told where to put the plaque, and having studied under Julian I feel confident that he wouldn't be too happy either.
I have submitted nomination letters, just as the owner wishes, on both of these men, but I will not do so again. I will not be the one that allows their names to be discussed in a closed session of a closed Board for whatever purposes they meet.
I have to wonder also, how much background check is made of the board members who participate. Maybe it's time someone takes a look. Do I doubt the integrity of everyone on the Board? Certainly not but I have a hunch maybe one of them can't take too much of a Formula 409 bath. I do believe that thesejudgemental elements should follow a two way street.
Finally, one other quote from the SGHOF dissertation. It states:
"One plaque is GIVEN (emphasis added) to the recipient or the family, while one is displayed at the convention site."
The word GIVEN implies that it costs the recepient nothing, but if the two emails I've received from a couple of recent inductees are correct, they both paid for the private plaques, over 700 Dollars in one case. Anyone care to comment on that?
All the above is my stated opinion.
