At the risk of sounding a little foolish (never stopped me before, so...)I was in a second hand shop late this afternoon and saw an interesting LP in the old records bin. The trouble is, I can't remember the name but it could be well known enough by some of the forumites that it's not really important. It's an album of steel guitar instrumentals called um, Nashville Steel Guitar Greats or something? Anyway, the most memorable part is the full cover shot of Pete Drake playing a wonderful looking Sho-Bud with his name emblazoned on the front of it. Others listed on the album include Don Helms, Jimmy Day and Herb Remington. I guess my question is: I haven't owned a record player in years, but is this one hard enough to come by to buy it anyway just as a collectible of a bygone era? I don't know what they're asking. Hmm, now that I think of it, the cover alone makes it worth having. Anyone know this album? (By the way, I'm not a collector or anything, I'm just a player drawn to steel guitar related stuff) |

I have a lot of those old steel LP's and notice, like this one, it seems the players favored original instrumentals, most of which weren't very good, instead of the more well known tunes.
I assume this was to avoid paying royalties but in my opinion, was the reason these instrumental albums were never very popular. |

Scott...grab that album! It's a "keeper". I especially liked Dick Stubbs' "Wired for Sound". Dick was a great west-coast player, and was one of the "unknown" guys responsible for that "west-coast sound".
Trivia...As I recall, that guitar pictured on the front was originally Buddy's guitar, and the metal plate with Pete's name was put on it to cover up Buddy's name, which was inlaid on the front of the guitar!
Another good old album you might run across (that came out a little later) is titled "The Steel Guitar Hall Of Fame" (nothing to do with the later organization). This is another Starday hi-fi release, featuring 14 songs also...
"Steel Guitar Rag", by Leon McAuliff
"Pleading", by Pete Drake
"Nashville Glide", by Herb Remington
"I'll Be All Smiles Tonight", by Deacon Brumfield
"Steel Driver", by Jimmy Day
"Salty Dog", by Shot Jackson
"Jody's Chimes", by Cousin Jody
"Night Walk", by Little Roy Wiggens
"Singing Strings", by Buddy Emmons
"Hilo March", by Jerry Byrd
"Tennesee Plowboy", by Roy Wiggens
"Steel Guitar Special", by Speedy West
"Beneath The Willow", by Brother Oswald
Starday's to be commended for putting out these all-steel compendium albums 'way back then! My copy of this is lent out right now, but as I recall, Pete's on the cover of this one too, playing a nice D9 Sho~Bud fingertip model.
I may be wrong, but I think Pete was partially responsible for these albums being released.
