I have always been an admirer of Leonard Zinn
as far back as when I first heard Leonard while being a member of the 101 Ranchboys.
Being a rookie steel player at that time I always looked upon Leonard as one of my favorites alog with Jerry Byrd,Roy Wiggens etc. I thought of Leonard as my idol and that he was and still is to this day.
I have just receieved a Great example of Leonard today as his most recent CD is something anyone who has the ears for beauty will appreciate.
The Title is "ALOHA FROM HAWAII" and it features Leonard of course and a great backup group as well as the voices of Gary Aiko and Momi Kahawaiolaa.. ask for a copy I know you will enjoy the sounds of real authentic artistry at its best.
Thank You Leonard and your group for a job well done.
Jody Carver It dont get any better than this. |

Thanks for the heads up Roy and please keep in touch and my best to Laurie. Leonard is one heck of a steel player, his touch is magnificent.

Roy and Jody, what you've said is very true, but you should have included the fact that L.T. Zinn was also a reknowned musician with Western and Western Swing artists as well. He's done it all! His credits include backing Tex Ritter in addition to his experience with Andy Reynolds and the 101 Ranch Boys broadcast every Saturday on the ABC Radio Network, back in the 1950's (which I recall quite well). L. T. Zinn is one of the nicest steel players I've ever met and he has more artistic credentials than most of us could ever dream of achieving. |

Bob I should have known better. It is Bob Maickel who back then told me of LT Zinn and darn it, I guess I am getting old thanks for coming up to bat for me. I can always count on Bob Maickel.
See you at the PSGA show this coming November
It should be a great one
Best to you and Cathy

All accolades in the world for this great musician would never cover all his bases. Truly one of the greats in our steel guitar world. I have this new Hawaiian CD of Leonards and it is already the favorite one that I like to listen to. I am glad L.T. recorded most of this one in Hawaii and retained that authentic beautiful Hawaiian sound and influences. I am trying to learn his version of "Lovely Hula Girl" and will ask L.T. to play that song with me on the Hawaiian show there in St. Louis. (That way, I can sit on my hands and hear it done properly). See you all there soon.

I joined the SGF in 1998 after discovering it on the internet. I had been on a 15 year hiatus from playing dobro & non pedal.
I attended the ISGC in 1999. I didn't know a soul there and very little about pedal steel. It was overwhelming for me.
When I first arrived, there were a few fellows playing Hawaiian music in the lobby. I didn't know who he was at the time, but I watched as a bar was handed to LT Zinn and he played some beautiful music on an aqua colored Canopus steel.
Throughout the weekend I saw this man all over the place playing pedal steel, non pedal and standard guitar. He played on the stage, off the stage, had boundless energy and ALWAYS a friendly smile on his face.
This past year at the HSGC in Peoria, I once again had the great pleasure to see LT Zinn perform. His excellent musical ability along with his zany antics was one of the highlights for me.
Yes, truly a wonderful, one of a kind gentleman. |

I've never had the opportunity to personally meet Mr. Zinn....and yet......memories of what I heard over the little plastic kitchen table top radio when I was but about 7-8 years of age still ring clearly in my mind.
It was the 101-Ranch Boys........It's my recollection that he was playing in C#min tuning(?) altho' I could be very, very wrong about that? I enjoyed the way he always seemed to fill-in those empty spaces between songs by rolling those beautiful, big fat solid chords between the songs the band was doing as a group. Great background melodies.
I have several of his CD's and find them as rich and exciting to listen today, as those first sounds were to me, so many, many years ago.
Leonard, you've given each of us so much to cherrish and enjoy thro' these many years.
THANK YOU... |

Leonard is overwhelmed by your wonderful comments.
We just discover this post, as we were in PA due to the grave illness of 2 of my siblings.(Evelyn)
We drove by the WSBA radio station (not a station anymore) the building looks exactly as it did when the 101 Ranch Boys had pictures taken there.
Leonard is remembered everywhere he goes in PA...people still remember him and the band.
He wanted me to thank you all for your comments. He gets very emotional by all of that.
He will be in St Louis and yes Mr. Stafford he's looking forward to playing " Lovely Hula Girl" with you.
Thanks again, friends, you have made his day. |

What a treat for me coming up in St.Louis. And about the "Lovely Hula Girl" song, just yesterday we had a session with one of the great guitar players ever-Bob Saxton- and that was one of the songs we rehearsed. You should hear the arrangement Bob put on this song instantly. Sitting on the stage with someone of this talent is a treasured gift and wonderful opportunity to make me just sit on my hands and listen. Bob was very, very impressed with L.T. playing , touch and techniques. I had to give him my favorite L.T. CD for coming down to play with us here in Gulfport so I will have to purchase a few more when we all get to St. Louis. That is one great CD to have folks if you really love the true sound of our steel guitats and the authentic Hawaiian sounds of the Islands. Great job, L.T. Best of health to all in your family , Evelyn.

PS: Bob's playing reminds me of all those great recordings Jerry Byrd put out with Chet Atkins on guitar-and to have him sitting next to you on stage, all I needed was to have Jerry or Leonard sitting next to him. That way I could sit in the front row and just be in hog - heaven. What a treat that would be. Bob plays steel also. He informed me that Jerry and Don Helms are his two major influences. I hope to hear his steel playing soon. Bob was made an Honorary Member of our Deep South Steel Guitar Assoc. during our last session here in Gulfport and he will be one of our main features on our next show on Aug. 6th. More on this in a later input.

I remember Leonard and the 101 Ranch Boys and their radio broadcasts on the York, Pa radio station (WORK???) and later on Channel 8 in Lancaster, Pa.
I remember, as a kid, going to some live shows of the 101 Ranch Boys at Valley View Park and in my home town of Mechanicsburg, Pa.
I was just starting on lap steel and along with Little Roy Wiggins, Leonard was an early hero and influence on me.
A coincidence, when I lived in Laurel, Md the band I was working in, in the early 70's, would work occasionally at "Carl Zinn's Club 355: in Frederick, MD. Carl was either a brother or cousin of Leonard's. |

I have worked with Leonard T. many times. He is not only a great musician, but a great person as well. He always has a goog joke to tell and loves life. I am proud to call him my friend. I just to know, where does he get all that energy? Bobby |

We are all proud of Leonard here in Michigan.
Every year our club meets and he always shows up.
Last fall in October he showed up in Trufant and sat down to someone elses guitar and played a couple of great songs. LT is one of a kind. A real gentleman.
Bobby Caldwell, I don't know where he gets all that energy either, I have been trying to figure it out for years.....al
