I was at the show and Winnie was the first one back off stage to congratulate me.He was so happy to see me inducted,I had a big hug from Winnie and was well aware of his health problem. He hugged my wife as well, little did I realize at the time, both Winnie and my
wife Marilyn would shortly be gone.
Thanks for the great photo of Winnie, I too shall copy and frame it, many thanks for all your dedication to the steel guitar community as well. |

And in case anybody missed it, Winnie's Home Page, with some of his latest thoughts, and messages..
I'm still going over all my correspondence with him in the last couple years, and the loss is not quite sinking in.
I'm putting this on here as I know Winnie would approve. If anybody objects, let me know and I'll feel bad about not yanking it.

Probably my last trip over. Getting too old to do the trip comfortably.
The Country scene here is unbelievable.
I'm hooked up with a producer who writes music for modern dance and TV dramas. I go in every so often to "put down some texture." LOTS of fun.
He just got a grant to produce a CD of ME doing waltzes-- mostly original tunes.
We've laid down the first tracks-- steel, guitar, and click.
Now he'll talk it over with a bunch of musicians he knows.
I'm leaving it in his hands. God knows what it will sound like. One thing sure-- it will NOT be Gnashville!!
So... I'm having fun. The name of the game.
My health has not been great, and I'm struggling on several fronts. When confronted with my own mortality I decided that I make each day great and enjoy it.
Happily, I cashed in a bunch of stocks my dad left me when he died. They were slowly going down the gurgler, so I cashed them and brought them to NZ when the Dollar here was at 40 cents. The stuff more than doubled. OK... it's kiwi $, but I can spend it HERE.
So a while back I passed a used car lot and there was a bright yellow Mercedes SLK. Came home and told my wife. She said, "before you dream too much about it, go down and see if you can even get in and out." I did. I could. I bought the f%%%%r. Haven't had this much fun driving since I had my hot Corvair in 1965.
Have fun. Be happy. That's what life should be about.

Such a guy.
That's as close as he came to sharing the specifics ( which I didn't know until lately) of his health. We swapped some pretty good "Merle" and other stories.
I hope like the Jimmy Day ones, that someday more become published.

Thanks a LOT, Walter! My friend, and steel guitar mentor, Mike Bagwell, and I were talking today about how, in the midst of talk about teaching, design, and what an all-around good guy Winnie was---We were neglecting to mention that he was also a MONSTER player!!
So again, Walter, thanks for reminding us. A lot of us needed to hear that clip! |

I bet Winnie had a great time in St. Louis, although he was in constant pain and had to take a lot of rest.
On Monday morning, hen the convention was over, I went down for breakfast. Winnie was there and asked me if I hadn't received his phone message the night before. I didn't see it, because I never expected anybody to call me far away from home. Winnie said that he only wanted to ask if we could have breakfast together. I am so glad that I got the chance to sit down and talk with him for an hour!
This always will be one of my treasured memories!

I met Winnie at his one man SG seminar on oct 11, 1981 at the Dux club in Houlton Me.
Great guy, Great player & teacher. He will be greatly missed. |

Thankyou Walter and everyone else for sharing your memories. I only knew Winnie from his book (which I use all of the time), Steel Wool (which bOb still has available by the way), his website, and a handfull of emails. It's nice to have these other little glimpses. ( Hey Winnie, did I spell "glimpses" right?)
