In case anybody's interested, I found a link to download a video of me playing on the "Last Call with Carson Daly Show" last week on NBC with the rock star Scott Weiland (from the Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver). It's a pretty big file. I can't even download it myself on my old computer. High speed internet connection is a must.
The name of the tune is "The man I didnt know". It's a rock power ballad with a touch of country flavoring......i.e.....me. This is quite a departure for hard rocker Scott, who wrote this song about his C&W loving dad.
I'm proud to have been a part of this whole experience. I'm featured pretty promemently, which I hope doesnt set the steel back too far.

p.s. The hat wasnt my idea. |

Very Nice! Great tune and really great playing Rick! Probably the best I've heard in quite a while! Let alone from a rock star, so "Thanks" to Scott Weiland too! Give us more like this.
The hat kind of makes you look like an evil Dwight Yokum, maybe we should call you "Dwight Nuke-um".
The only thing prettier than Scott's red "Burrito Bros" suite was the red Sho-Bud you were playing .[This message was edited by Garry Vanderlinde on 27 May 2005 at 12:22 AM.] |

Great stuff and exposure for the steel! Steel guitar and steel drum , that must be a first!
Way to go...

Hey Rick,
That was some wonderful playing...nice big chords--your vibrato is f#$*in' great.....mournful.
Now "IMHO" all you need are a pair of skin tight pink slacks, and man.....Unstoppable!

I enthusiastically second this! Wonderful! And just generally wonderful playing.
The vibrato I usually hear coming out of Nashville makes me cringe. |

Thanks guys
Concerning Scott's suit....it's an actual vintage "Newdie" suit previously owned by no less than Gram Parsons. I think it was a loaner from the Hard Rock Cafe collection in Hollywood. |

Rick, thanks for the link; your work on this video was an excellant showcase for that obscure steel-guitar instrument! The camera director was obviously impressed with the visual effects of the steel guitar, and in addition, the audio mix of the steel was extraordinary.
With this kind of positive exposure the steel-guitar may not be dead yet!

Rick-
Good work! Loud, proud, sounded great, and an extremely well-rehearsed group ! : )
And the cameraman really was impressed... I think it's the hat, Rick, I hope they let you keep it.

Rick,
Great job on the Show. You play with alot of taste & execution. Also you have just the right amount of reverb & effects through your amp for the song you were doing. That's a nice Sho-Bud you were playing too! Nick |

Hey, Rick--that was worth the 17 hour download. Great. I really enjoyed it.
Watch that talk about monsters, though---for some of us it's a glandular thing, y'know? Plus I think there's a monster hiding under my bed and you've scared me now.
Thanks for the link! Would never had guessed Weiland was a Nudie suit, steel guitar, steel drum sort of guy. Too cool.

Nice!
Y'know, Weiland really looks and acts like David Bowie in that clip. He's always imitating someone. When STP started, he was imitating Layne Staley from Alice In Chains. Now he's gone from grunge rock to glam rock. I think I see a little Adam Ant in his current appearance too.
But that doesn't matter. You're playing was great!

Rick, you still need a VHS dupe from my digital recording for your archives? Maybe you haven't even seen it yet! Cool playing, and I, too, thought that hat was cool and hip, I might borrow the look if you don't mind.

Rick, I'm just home for a couple of days and saw your posting - I loved your playing (but, you knew that I would ), and your tone and the great "synth-like" vibrato (Mike Smith - ish) - but, no! -it's Rick Schmidt, world-class steel player (IMHO). See you soon in jolly ol' Blighty! |

Gerry....Thanks so much for the kind words my good man! I'm wondering if "synth-like" wasn't refering to my sometimes flatulent sounds. I too am looking forward to playing bass for your great steel guitaring and hoisting a proper pint or ten in J.O.E. (jolly olde etc....)
