I want to learn more about the playing of this instrument that I don't play. I play on an electric balalajka and tab is more or less useless to me. Any books on steel guitar or pedal steel guitar playing that use standard notation?

Andy Volk and I are reprinting the Joaquin Murphey book (first edition sold out!) this month. All solos in C6th tuning that can be played on nonpedal OR pedal (without using pedals, natch) and standard notation plus tab with chord symbols. Solos from in-print reissue CDs and web-available mp3s. Stay tuned!

Yeah, stuff like that! That's what can help a balalajka player too you know! Great!

BTW, where do I buy any of these books. Mel Bay of course. Should check their site. Or?

Try "Pedal Steel Guitar - a manual of style" by Winnie Winston. It not only has regular music notation plus Jimmie Crawford's MYSYM-TAB notation (which even includes fingering), but it has great material, being a study of the styles of Terry Bethel, Jimmie Crawford, John Hughey and Weldon Myrick. It's available from Scotty's Music.
Cheers,

I recently got a Goodrich volume pedal from Scotty's (via my step-son who lives in LA. Maybe I should order some books from them too.
