Fun stuff. Max F. was one of the greats
of animation in his day... AND ours.
And he sure could pick a great backup band.
Royal Samoans Woaha!
If memory serves he invented rotoscoping ; animation over live film.
He certainly brought it to a high level.

Agreed on the stereotypes but, I believe a lot of what the Flesichers wanted to do is show how ridiculous the stereotypes were. They psuhed the limits on sexual explicitness of the time as well.
On another note
Glad I was able to give everyone an aahh that's good feeling 
I had heard about this film in reading about Sol but, couldn't find it and as a fluke while reading my red hot jazz e-mail the link came up for the archive.
Another good one for lap steel is the musical mountaineers Betty episode. it features a steel being played with nose. Now that's technique

So that's Sol Hoopi playing in that cartoon?
A couple of weeks ago I picked up a 2 DVD set of Betty Boop cartoons, including the one discussed in this thread, and there's some priceless live footage at the beginning of some of them. Cab Calloway singing and dancing(great dancing!)with his band, and Louis Armstrong with his orchestra in another cartoon. The cartoons are certainly "out there". Another with Cab Calloway singing St James Infirmary that has some very wild and crazy ideas in it. Pretty cool stuff! |

The Fleischer's loved putting real live musicians in the rotoscope sections. They also took the opportuntiy to feature minority acts that were sergregated out of mass audience exposure in other formats.
