The Hukilau 2005 was an AMAZING event. The music, the food, the ohana... it was all quite amazing. Saturday night at the Mai Kai was just too much. All I can say is YOU HAVE TO GO AND SEE THIS PLACE! Next year is the 50th anniversary of the Mai Kai, and it should be quite a year.

Here's a pic of Hoale Kats!!! doing our set in the Samoa Room at the Mai Kai.

This link below is to someone's Hukilau gallery. They posted some video clips too, and the last one is a room party jam sometime after 4:30 in the morning playing "On A Coconut Island." It's a drunkfest (we were drinking Scorpions -- whoa!), to be sure, and the coconuts get a bit... well, nuts, but I was surprised that the steel came though as well as it did through the MicroCube, and as buzzed as I was, managed to hit most of the notes, even!

Anyway, it's the one entitled: "After party at Casa Unga Bunga"

Enjoy.

Looks like a great time for one and all Todd. While I typically make the Tiki Oasis in Palm Springs, I've yet to make the Hukilau. I hear the Mai Kai is da' place!

Todd - I was really looking forward to being there and hearing you guys, but I'm having difficulty standing and walking due to a slipped disc so I'm unable to go anywhere.
I'm glad to see it went well !

I'll just have to be content with listening to your CDs . .

Hey Rick -- sorry we didn't get to meet. It was an amazingly packed weekend of events, and we barely had time to get from one thing to the next, nevermind getting out of there! Sure was fun, though. May get to come back down your way again for a private party. I'll let you if it indeed happens, and hopefully, we can get together. Sorry about your back I know what that entails, as my wife has been having some real trouble with her back, too. NOT fun.

Kevin -- you NEED to make Hukilau next year. Incredible time, and it will be the Mai Kai's 50th anniversary year. That place is WAAAAAAY cooler than I thought it would be, and the drinks are the best. Expensive? Yes -- but THEEEEE BEST!

Todd-- you and the 'cube sound pretty good, in fact for Scorping along at 4:30 a.m. you sound amazingly good. (When the going gets tough etc.!) One thing-- this is the second video you've given us with you as The Phantom Steeler....I'm starting to think if the camera ever did roll in your direction, all we'd see is a beret/fedora/panama floating over a Fender console! --Steve

Hey Stephan - thanks! Yeah, that's true. Actually, the camera did pan over me playing my lapsteel, but it's so freaking dark in there, you can't really tell. I was playing this lap:

I was thinking it might be a Supro, but Gulden or ERP seems to be more likely. It actually belongs to my drummer, and I'm buying it from him. I really like the tone of it. It's super light, and that cheapo Silvertone looking pickup sounds great. In the video, I just wish the coconut "player" would have toned it down a bit, but eh... it's a party, and we were all drinking Scorpions.
