It has been almost three months since the Dallas jamboree where I met a talked to John Hughey.I have played (over and over again)the three CD's I bought there, and tonight while my dear Wife was engrossed in the the continuing story of the local soaps on tv I listened once again to a master of the instrument we all love and adore being played with such emotion that it................well I just cannot find words to describe the emotion and feeling that John inserts in his playing,He plays an Emmons and a Zum and I cannot tell the difference between the two.
He is a true master of the pedal steel
Best regards
billy

There are steel players who amaze me with their technical ability and speed. But the true master of this instrument is Mr. John Hughey, who puts his entire soul into the music he plays. Larry J.

John is of course a great player but just as important, one of the nicest people you will ever meet. I am proud to call him my friend. Bobby

Just have to join Bobby in all he says. One year in St. Louis, when Jerry Byrd was performing, I noticed when Jerry started playing a transformation overcame him- and it was like he became part of his instrument. I have seen the very same thing watching John Hughey play. This is a true sign of a master and his instrument showing us their heart and soul to listen to. I am so very proud of John's friendship. He is true to himself.

John has had a influence on a lot players over the years including myself. He was the first professional steel player I ever met at 14 in 1971. I decided on that Friday night in Runnelstown, Mississippi years ago that I wanted to play steel guitar. Here in 2005 people still want to hear some of John's intros and licks at different jam sessions and clubs. I make it point not to play John's style at some of the steel shows where he's on the schedule. If he's not on the schedule then I'll usually include 15 Years Ago and Look At Us on my set. I have great respect for John Hughey, as well as his wonderful wife, Jean. As long as I'm around his music will be played here in Mississippi. I can assure you of that. Thanks.

Well said Billy... John Huey still has something that most players have lost and that is a style that you can recognize when you hear it. I view him as the Hank Williams of Steel Guitar. His soulful playing will never be forgotten.. When he wants to play fast he can play as fast as anyone and never lose his taste and thats what impresses me so much about John.. Along with Buddy Emmons, these two have probably influenced all of us to try to be better players... This said, I'm not trying to take anything away from the other great steel players such as Lloyd, Bobbe, Jimmy Day and a whole host of other greats to numerous to list. Just have to mention Julian Tharpe.

When you talk to John, it's like you're talking to your favorite uncle. Just a super nice person, very friendly and accommadating, but when he starts picking it just blows you away. In Magee, Ms, when Joe Wright kicked off Orange Blossom Special at a "brisk" pace I thought the rest of the players would have to adlib the fast arpeggieos in the bribge, but they all nailed it, John, Mike Johnson, and Hal Higgins, who, by the way, is a monster player himself.
