I heard a cut yesterday from Bill Hayley's 1st
album called "13 Women" with a fairly prominant
steel part. I remember seeing a steel player
in pictures of his band back then. So, who was
he & whatever happened to him? It's strange how
that band was considered by many to be the start
of "rock & roll" but other bands of the time
left the steel guitarists behind. You kind of
wonder where we'd be if they had stayed in the
picture years ago. It might have broadened our
horizons a bit, who knows? |

I'm lucky enough to have met and worked with the Original Comets. Yes indeed, it was Billy Williamson. ANd they still rock more than anyone else!

I subbed on five shows on the east coast as a kid, father wouldn't let me continue on the road with this band (or any band). After Bill died, I worked with Nick Masters and the remainder of the original "Comets" group in the Philadelphia area. This was in 1967-8. Then moved to Nashville.
I feel everything worked out for the best, Dad was right.

Billy Williamson was one the founding members of the Haley band, along with Bill, pianist/accordionist Johnny Grande and their business manager and they were also tight business partners. This is probably one of the reasons why Billy was still with the band when Bill hit big with r'n'r. Not to mention that they were also good friends. Billy also sang quite a bit on the Comets' Decca recordings, both solo and as part of the vocal trio and his contribution on Haley's r'n'r recordings are not as insignificant as you might think; most of the Essex recordings have a steel solo and crash bar licks ( a'la Speedy West ) and on the Decca stuff, when tenor sax took over, Billy played a lot of three part harmony riffs with guitar and sax. |

Tony, is this the album where he's covering Me & Bobby McGhee, Who'll stop the rain, and a bunch of other creedance stuff?
I used to have those tracks of a compilation with no liner notes, and always wondered where they where from and who was playing the steel.
Is this album still in print somewhere?

I know Allen Rush and he says his brother played for Bill Haley in the fifty's. Can't think of his brother's name. Stu. |

Well, something really amazing happened today!
I went to my mailbox, and out of the blue, there was a CD waiting for me, a copy of Rock Around The Country, discussed in the thread above!
Thank you so much Russ, you really made my day! Gestures like that are what makes me feel good about the world. Needless to say, I also have something in the mail for you, my friend, hope you like it.
And the good news is, these tracks are even better than I remembered! Yes Curly is the best thing on the CD. Definitely a must have. I'm not going to even try to describe his playing here, but yes, it is wonderful.
On a funny note, for some reason, Bill Halley's voice on these tunes reminds me of Jerry Jeff Walker's... Go figure
