Assuming that Bob did multiple versions of this tune, who was/were the original steel guitarist(s)?

This may not be correct, but according to the index from the book, "San Antonio Rose, The Life & Music Of Bob Wills," it lists the earliest version recorded sometime between mid 1945 and 1947 for the Tiffany Music Company. It was an instrumental version and the steel player was Herb Remmington.
