How many of you boys have heard of the band Two Tons of Steel? they are getting a pretty good reputation around the Lone Star State. I know they play Gruene Hall a lot. I'm just wondering who is playing steel for them. I listened to a couple of MP3's and it sounds pretty dang good. Check it out here: http://www.twotons.com/

Yep, Denny Mathis is another Texas Steeler who's starting to get his just dues. I think he used to work with a gent named Geronimo Trevino, another diamond in the rough.

One of my first--and only teachers. I worked out of Houston in the 70s and some of the lads were from San Antonio. I had a couple of lessons with Denny.

Everyone is correct. Denny is the steel player for two tons of steel. For many years he played D-12 MSA, but now he's a non-peddeler. He is a great player and darn good teacher. Having taken lessons from him for four years I got to know him quite well. He is a gentelman. Don't quote me on this, but I think he has been inducted into the TSGA hall of fame. In a word, he's killer.

Denny is the man for sure,a super guy and a monster player. He plays a 4 neck Fender with 2 tons of steel, otherwise he plays a PP Emmons wrap around and can blow your doors off with either one. Denny wore out several D 12 MSAs.
When I moved to San Antonio(Air Force) in 1966 with my Fender 1000 Denny was the first Texas steel player I ran into. Told my wife "If this guy is typical, I'll never get a job here". He is a monster player and at that time heavy into Curly Chalker.
Denny is currently playing at Fiesta Texas again this year in the daytime as well as 2 tons of steel. |

Denny goes back a long ways. I have a vinyl from the 1960's, "Tex Williams at the Mint", with Denny on steel and Glenn Campbell on guitar, credited on the album.

| I've done several shows with 2 tons. They've never had steel with them. I was looking at their photos on their site, and I don't see a steeler. Do they just record with steel, but don't perform with one? |

Hey Chris how's it going.
I have never seen any pics of them with a steeler, but if you listen to their live CD, Denny is all over it. I was wondering the same thing. |

I think Denny's gigging with TToS is a lot like "love"... it's a sometimes thing. 
They did come up and accompany him when he was inducted into the TSGHoF a couple years ago.

I met Denny a couple of years ago when I played a 'Patsy' show in San Antonio - he had been the steel-player on the previous production of the same show for the same producer, and I was very nervous at the prospect!
There was no way I could 'fill his shoes', but I had a great two weeks in SA, the highlight of which was an afternoon at Denny's house fooling around on our steels. I learned a great deal that day - Denny Mathis was kind and generous, and will always be one of my very favourite players.

And in 1960, at a dance in Quihi, TX the kid playing "Chalker" on the steel reached over and picked up a 6-string and played Cannonball Stomp. That was my first guitar lesson in playing the Merle Travis style.
He is a killer 6-string player as well and will scare you with his ability to play jazz.

Denny is a great guy/picker/teacher and a pleasure to listen to. I subbed a few shows for him at Fiesta Texas, and I'm sure they were glad to get him back. 
Unless he got it repaired, only three of the four necks on that Fender work, not that he needs them all. He could outplay most of us on baling wire nailed to a plank. |

I took Lessons from Denny in the mid 70's. I was stationed at Lackland AFB at the time. I had an old doubleneck Blanton then. I was learning C6 at time,and still have the lesson materials which I refer back to frequently.Every time I play the 6th neck I appreciate the help I received from Denny.
