Here are the clips from Bob Carlucci (bob's text also):
Here are some various clips of my outrageously mediocre steel guitar stylings for your amusement.. These were played on three different steel guitars... Carter,, Sho bud ,,MSA... just for kicks, I'd like my steel playing friends opinion on which guitar goes with which track.. First winning guess gets a "valuable" prize that EVERY pedal steel guitarist needs!. Well ,, kinda valuable. $3 valuable.. hey what do you want?? I'm poor.. I'm a steel player don't forget!!!
Anyway,, this is all in fun,,, enjoy and take a guess.. they all sound goofy to me, but owning and playing the guitars , I can hear a difference, but IMHO not that much.. maybe you guys can hear more.. anyway thanks to my friend JAY for helping out with this dopey thread!! Note from Jay:
You can right mouse click on each one and choose “Save Target As” and save them to your hard drive….no streaming audio here….
My pleasure bob, I’m glad I could help Jay

Not attempting to brown-nose, but there's nothing mediocre about that playing of yours!
My guess is Bud - MSA - Carter - Bud - Carter
...if I'm not 100 per cent right, I blame the one inch/one cent speaker in my computer, way down behind the desk.

I could get closer, but for reverb settings and effects, mixing, arrangement.
Just goes to show: it's the player, not the steel.

Charlie's got it!!.. actually as far as amps.. all recodings were done on a Fender deluxe reverb.. They were not mine.. they were in the various studios and I wanted that Fender tone in the cans.. I think direct to board signal was taken also, and may have been mixed with the Deluxe .. Any other effects were added at the producers/ engineers discretion.. I don't think they added too much.. The "spacy" kind of tone you may hear is really about what I get as my "regular" sound... compression and reverb... thats about it when playing live... a little delay in certain songs... not too bad a tone I guess, but I've heard better...
By the way,, nobody has yet claimed the prize!! its the answer to all a E9 steel players problems!!.. It will be sent right to the winners door!! bob |

BTW, since you've given us that the Carter is on exactly one of the tracks, that means there are exactly 5 * 2^4 = 80 possible choices. There are enough of us here to wear you down by brute force. |

I think you play great Bob. Here's my guess
1 Sho Bud
2 Carter
3 Sho Bud
4 MSA
5 MSA
Just wanted to add that I think the 1st and 3rd guitars are the same one, and 4 and 5 are the same. Maybe I have the wrong brand, but I think they are the same.[This message was edited by Glenn Austin on 04 May 2005 at 09:43 AM.] |

DING DING DING!!!.. We have a winner!!!,, Glenn, you have a great ear!!..
Just my luck, to have a PRO sound engineer around when I am trying to mess with people's heads!.. Indeed, The #1 and #3 cuts were on the same PROIII.. Different bands, studios, engineers.. years apart!! sensitive ear you got..
Track 2 was done on the Carter with a very lightly wound Truetone pickup... This cut is the only recent track.. The others are at least 12-13 years old. I really love the sound of this guitar.. I had the pickup wound close to old Fender specs, and I sometimes get a pretty fair approximation of that tone.
4 and 5 were indeed done on my beloved old mica/plywood MSA... Which had quite an UN MSA sound.. It had 3 pickups.. A GeorgeL 10-5, mid 60'6 Sho Bud with coil tap, and the stock MSA... a BEWILDERING array of switching/tapping/phasing capabilities, mini toggles everywhere,,and some really cool tones... I REALLY miss it.. It was an unusual sounding steel.. anyway, Glenn please email me with your address.. Thanks to all you guys!! You are a bunch of good sports to listen to AND look at this nonsense!!... bob[This message was edited by Bob Carlucci on 04 May 2005 at 10:28 AM.] |
