We have a camera crew coming out to our gig tonight to shoot part of our band video. I know some of you boys have already been through this ordeal. My question:
How can I be better looking on camera!

show some skin! that usually goes well with the 18 to 24 demographic.
Either that or tattoos and piercings.
Also, don't forget to get up real close to the camera and make some wierd gesture with your hand while biting your lower lip.
In all seriousness, using make up on stage sometimes helps reduce glare from shiny sweaty skin. |

Kiyoshi sez "show some skin! that usually goes well with the 18 to 24 demographic."
Take it from someone who's played more than one gig...naked, it ain't necessarily true....
Keep on pickin'!

I was thinking of something like.....putting a sack over my head. |
ha, like that guitarrist who wears a bucket over his head. His name is, coincidentally, Buckethead!
Hey, I would wear a fried chicken bucket over my head if I played with Guns and Roses also! |

man...that's weird. The guy that gave me the sunglasses said the shirt looked really bad, but keep the glasses on! Now I'm really confused.
But seriously, those Runaway Twang t-shirts look killer! |

And if it's an upbeat song, don't smile, and if it's slow song, frown and look mean,, I think that about covers it.
When we made a live video, I couldn't believe how still we were standing, I could of sworn we moved around more than that, so jump around if your on your strat, and wiggle in your seat if your at the steel |

OK, lemme see if I have all this down:
paper sack over my head
show some skin
put make up on whatever skin I am showing
get something pierced before I get to the gig
look mean
look mad
wiggle around
wear my runaway twang t-shirt
forget the sun glasses
bring an extra sock
Dang, I hope I can remember all of this! |

Mark,
I'll make it simple, wear something comfortable and appropriate for the "taping", play with your usual confidence and conviction and smile alot (when in doubt about anything, smile bigger). What the heck, that works for the Big E, should work for you.
Have a fun and knock'em dead!
Keep on pickin'!

Show some skin...uh...yeah, if you're under 30.
Just be yourself. Unless this is going on CMT don't sweat it.

You forgot the Big HAT.
And use somewhat exagerated manerisims.
Remember the drag queen lesson from Victor /Victoria...
The small screen likes big actions.. other wise no one notices.
Smile that 1 cm more,
Think Speedy West more than Jimmy Day.
Crash bar vs smooth and steady...
Well at least LOOK like your moving...
If you suspect you are actually being shot in a scene... don't be completely still.
Editors tend to leave in interesting things with movement..
I know I AM a video editor.
Interact with the other players,
especially when they are doing something
and you have a rest.
Watching them solo and bopping to the groove works.
Of course ask the director what he is looking for from you, and give it to him.
Best way to stay off the cutting room floor.
Oh geeze...I just looked at your band pics...
IF the back drop is black DON'T WEAR BLACK,...!!!
Bring 2 tones of pants and 2-4 tones of shirts to the gig,
so you stick out of the background...
what ever THAT is.
DANG.. you almost disapeared![This message was edited by David L. Donald on 28 April 2005 at 01:59 PM.] |

David Donald, as an experienced professional video producer/editor, has of course nailed it.
With the big hat and bigger sock, I mean. ![](http://steelguitarforum.com/wink.gif) |

Yep, David has a lot of REAL advice for you, well worth paying attention to, particularly the extra clothing on hand in different colors. My additional two bits worth is this:
(1) Smile at the camera, laugh whenever you can, especially if it's pointed at you and the red tally light is on. Smile and laugh with your band-mates too -- even if there's no camera, it will raise the energy on stage and that makes a difference, camera or not.
(2) Wash your hands, polish the axe and dust the fretboard, that's probably the only shot of you the director will keep anyway.
Oh yeah, have a ball -- dg[This message was edited by Dave Grafe on 28 April 2005 at 02:53 PM.] |

Mark, Do not forget to wear clean underwear. You never know what those camera men will do to try to sell videos. |
