I wanted to give you all a heads up on a new CD. I am a big fan Bill Frisell and Greg Leisz, especially when they work together. But I am also a big fan of the songwriting father n' son Rufus and Loudon Wainwright. Loudon's new disc is GREAT!!! It just came out yesterday as is called "Here Come the Choppers"
The band is Bill Frisell (leader), Greg Leisz, David Piltch, and Jim Keltner. So, you have David, who was Frisell's bassist on Blues Dream, and Jim who was the drummer on Good Dog, Happy Man and Gone, Just Like a Train.
I just love it when artists that I love come together from different genres and make a killer album. Very cool!

Loudon's new record has been out for a while here in Europe.
Agreed, it´s´brilliant, as are ALL his records for one reason or another. He has a song for every occasion.
He also tends to have steel on quite a few CD´s. Very tastefully integrated in his folky/singer songwriter style.
Recommended.

Hey Jason! What a great crew! I've seen Greg Leisz with Emmylou Harris and admired his tasteful playing. Jim Keltner has been a top level studio drummer who's recorded and toured with Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, John Lennon, Bob Dylan and dozens of other superstars. I can't wait to get this one! Thanks for the heads up!

Dear Jason,
Thank you for posting this man, I would have never even known the record existed, and I am a huge fan of Frisell, Leisz and Keltner, lord their playing on that album is just incredible. Greg's solo on "My Biggest Fan" is amazing, so inspring. I had never heard Loudon's music before, he is truly one of the best writers I've heard in a long, long time, reminded me a bit of a less earthy Rodney Crowell, more folky I guess.
The sound of the album is also fantastic, Lee Townsend is the man. |

Yes, this is an incredible album! Loudon has been around for 30+ years and is very well established in the folk circles. His most popular song is a 70s tune called "Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road." He also had a popular one called "Rufus is a T*t Man" about his son as a baby. Rufus Wainwright is an incredible songwriter in his own right.
You may also recognize Loudon from his acting. He was on M*A*S*H a few times, and was in Sandra Bullock's movie 28 Days. Most recently he was the mayor of that weird little down in the movie Big Fish where everyone was barefoot and could never leave.
If you like this album check out "Last Man on Earth." Despite Frisell, Leisz, Keltner, and Piltch, I still like Last Man even better. It is so personal and honest. He had just left a long term relationship, and lost his mother. He moved into her home and lived by himself reflecting on his mom, his family, his life, and the fact that he is getting older in this strange new world of cell phones and SUVs. His lyrics have a lot of whit and humor, but are also so true to what his is feeling and living. A great GREAT songwriter.
