I'm gonna be 51 in a few weeks, and I've done it twice in the past month.... I used to do juvenile things like this when I was 16..
Man,, I really DO need a life before I wither up and croak. Am i the only one who has engaged in this teenage musical ritual at an advanced age??? C'mon you can tell us.. we're all family right??..
[*sat night and I'm at a computer keyboard alone talking about this kind of crap*]..
anyone have a life they can lend me?..... bob |

Actually I auditioned my Sho-Bud Pro-II over the phone.
It was at my sisters on Cape Cod Mass,
and I was in a portable, in a van in Nimes France,
just back from a bluegrass busking date with friends.
Heard a bit from each neck and bought it.
I have since then traded licks with Crowbear by phone several times. |

one of my favorite classifieds for a guitar player read "will play licks over the phone."
that said, I've started many a conversation with a rousing riff, and played stuff back and forth a few times too. I have also received messages consisting of one lick.
hey, when ya gotta go... |

I'd send my steel to Mike Cass for repairs, even if there was nothing wrong with it, just for those times he calls and plays Charlie Parker tunes over the phone while asking you how you want your pedals set up.

Heck; I use either my own or a pre~recorded steel solo as background on my answering~machine¡ Usually a fast uptempo tune like “Slippery Elm” or something similar. I started that years ago as payback for telemarketers and just stuck with the idea and modified it slightly after I got on the National ‘Do Not Call’ List! [Devil that I am!]

Actually about 84 or so I got the idea from a live radio feed in a coastal OR town tat looked to me like it was on a phone line. I didn't see why It couldn't be live both ways.
At the time I was attending a Com Col, and was looking into tie ins with other institutions, but got sidetracked by playing for a living, such as it was.
I'm sure that with the right software, given DSL speeds that a player could "phone in" their parts on a gig with real time monitors of the live perf.
Sounds funny, but I bet there are people doing it.

I received a phone call a few months ago at 1:00 am in the morning. When I picked up, there was a voice saying "Hey Walter, you have to listen to this..." and then I heard Lloyd Green's intro on "Just Between You And Me" as sung by our fellow Red Kilby - he had to call me and present his new CD (for good reason, everybody should have a copy of this one )
What a great way to lose some sleep!
Kind Regards, Walter

My friend and I regularly trade licks, or some other steel info, on the phone. The only down side is when the handset slips from under your chin onto the guitar. There's just no way I can reproduce the resultant lick again. I suppose that's what you would call a clanger!

Yes, I called my cousing who has played now for about 25 years to see what he thought. He said I was way past where he was when he first started. He even sent me all of his Jeff Newman stuff. Cool! Think I'll put in a call to my friend Mike Smith for a few tips! |

I just have to jump in here on this one.
At different times, several of "my boys" in this area have called to entertain me with
something they are working on, or even to hear a mini-jam. They lay their receiver down, I put my speaker on and it's the next best thing to being there (when you can't).
Innovation at it's best. Whatever works. |

My fondest memopry of Jimmy Crawford was when I called to order fret boards and he had Buck play the new JCH over the phone. Was all distorted and I could hardly stand it. But when he got done I just said "sounds great Jimmy!" Jimmy said "Sounds like a Rolls Royce don't it babe!" I just laughed and agreed. What a memory, what a guy.
