The question was asked here several years ago, but it's time to try it again.
I'd like to hear from any other steel players in Mexico. If you're not a member of the Forum and can't post, click the "send email" link above and send me an email.

Hi Farris,
Do you know where in Mexico your friends are? We're only about 40 miles from Mexico City here.
I understand about your health and your wife, believe me if anything happened (God forbid) to my wife I wouldn't leave her side either. That's how it should be. You're a good man.
If you ever do make it to visit Mexico be sure and let me know, you can be our guest, we have a nice guestroom. No possums I know of, but there's a critter called a Coati that we see now and then, looks like a cross between a raccoon and a cat... |

Hi Farris, well so far it looks like you're the only one who knows of any steelers in Mexico!
You mentioned Guadalajara in your email but didn't say if that's where Quinn is or Marvin, but I'm going to go ahead and send an email to Quinn since you posted his email address and see what he's got to say. If he's in Guadalajara, that's pretty far from here but maybe can get over there one of these days and meet him.
Thanks again Farris!
I'll let you know whatever I find out. |

James, I haven't heard from you in a while. I am curious as to how many steel players are in Mexico. It would be great to see it get popular there. I've helped out a Mexican band here in the Arlington area about 6 yrs ago and it was fun! The bass player wanted me to do sessions in Mexico. I neglected to give him my phone #, so I lost out there.
I've never been in Mexico. Do you get to play a lot of gigs there? |

I met Raul Huerta while in Chihuahua last year, with Johnny Lee. Real nice guy and picker. He's on the forum and a search should catch his e-add.

Hello Danny and Marty, thanks for trying to help but Raul and Kiyoshi are 2 of the total of 3 steel players in Mexico that I know about.
I met Kiyoshi last year, he's a great guy, extremely intelligent and I'll bet very talented too, but I haven't gotten to hear him play yet.
I have swapped a couple emails with Raul a couple years ago but lost his email address and haven't heard from him lately. I'll see if I can find his email address from searching and see what he's up to. He's a really nice guy too but he's way up north from me. I'm about 40 miles north of Mexico City.
The 3rd I know of here is Gonzalo Loranca, those who attended the St. Louis convention might remember him, another really great guy. I know there must be at least a few others. I sent an email to Farris'es friend, waiting to hear from him.[This message was edited by Jim Phelps on 09 April 2005 at 08:09 PM.] |

I've basically given up on finding other steelers down here. After meeting Jim, and later Gonzalo, I pretty much exausted all my leads on finding anyone.
I did recieve a cold call from someone who got my number from the steel guitarrist directory, but he sounded pretty drunk and he was going on about how he had just bought a "slap steel" and wanted to know what was up.
NEWSFLASH!!! It's been pretty lonely down here since I got into PSG.
anyway From that call and other clues I get the impression there might actually be quite a few lap steel players down here. But still no other pedal players... |

Yes, that's true, Farris...anything you bring down you have to leave here, in my house.... ha ha! Bring a good steel, I'll take good care of it, really!
Nah, I've never heard that anything you bring has to stay. If you come by plane you can't carry much anyway, but you can take back whatever you bring in unless there was some kind of really big screw-up somehow.
We drove down here with a van stuffed so full I thought it would split at the seams like a size 3 bikini on Anna Nicole Smith. The border guys didn't even look inside or tax us on any of it, although all the available info says to have reciepts for everything, etc.
Second time we drove here, we had only a few things in the van, crossed at the same place and that time they wanted us to empty the van! We just stood there and waited for him to do it himself. He didn't want to either. We ended up paying about $25 in tax. Other than that, no problems.
Farris, however or whenever you can visit Mexico, you're always welcome to come by and visit, we have a nice guestroom! We're only about 3 hours from Acapulco, and about 1-1/2 hours from the pyramids at Teotihuacan. Come by anytime. My wife Alicia is a great cook too, hope you like Mexican food, but she can make American too. Never done possum, though!
In answer to your question about country music here, except for a few, like Kiyoshi, Raul and Gonzalo, they don't even know what it is. The average person here has heard of Achy Breaky Heart and Charlie Daniels, and that's all they know about country music.
That info comes from my wife, an "actual Mexican" from Mexico City so I guess she knows.
I'd like to get some going here and let them know what it is, I think they'd like it. Nothing going on right now. Figured maybe I'd get a steel CD recorded and try to spread it around, then maybe can get a band going. I think Mexico is ripe for country music, both traditional and "new", to be a new trend. Hey Kiyoshi, how you doing? We posted at the same time.
I thought maybe this post would bring a few steel players out of the woodwork, but maybe they just aren't there.
I haven't even seen or heard from any lap players, but I did see on a website for a band in Mexico City that one of them claims to be a steelplayer, doesn't say lap, pedals or what. I sent an email but got no answer.
You gotta come on out here sometime Kiyoshi, come get out of the city for a while, breathe some country air, hang out for a while. |

I should mention that meeting Jim was a pleasure. I had been playing for only a few months when we met. And he politely answered all of my newbie questions about pick thickness, amps, levers...etc.
We didn't really get a chance to play that time, but from the little I heard -the riffs and licks he played while making a point about one thing or another- that he is a great player. At least he proved to me that I had a lot of work to do!
Thanks Jim for taking the time to humor a wide eyed newbie!

Hi Jody! Well we're not too close to Cancun, we're about 40 miles from Mexico City and Cancun is about a 90-minute flight from Mexico City. My wife says it's about an 18-hour drive from here but a lovely drive. Here's a map just for the heck of it so everybody can see where we are and Cancun is circled (actually the dot to show where we are should be closer to Mexico City):

Hey Jim! any leads? I haven't had any luck either, but hey if no one has popped up in 2 or 3 years, then they wont in the next couple of days, eh?
I put up my carter starter in the For sale section. So if we never find anyone, maybe we can start off some new steelers and get the ball rolling.
Jody,
sorry to butt in here, but, are you travelling to cancun? you just missed spring break down there

Hi Kiyoshi, good luck with selling your Starter, I'm sure you won't have any trouble, that steel looked perfect when I saw it.
I started this thread out of curiosity but I think you're right, it doesn't look like we're going to find any more steelers around here.
I already have my plan in mind, I'm going to finish my steel and guitar CD and then try to promote the steel here, we will show up anywhere we can, set up the steel and play a few songs with tracks, show the CD, maybe sell one or two and get some recognition for the steel around here. Don't know how well it'll work, but it can't hurt! |
