I have done studio work for over 30 years on keys and other stringed instruments, but last night was my first professional level recording session as a steeler. I can tell you that it gave me a whole new appreciation for Mr. Franklin, et al.
People have always said that my intonation was good, but good ain't good enough when the recorder is running. My first take was terrible.
After loosening up a bit, I gave it another shot and they kept most of it. Thanks to digital recording we could go back in and fix the little things. Stuff like not quite getting all the way off the A pedal on an AB to B glissando and things like that which were never noticeable live, stuck out like a sore thumb.
In all, it was a blast. I was allowed some creative liberties, although closely scrutinized, which I think sharpened my performance once I was comfortable with the producer. Onr thing about it, my GFI sounded absolutely stellar. Just ran it through my Pod and into the board and the tone was fantastic.
Of course this project is going to take about 12 weeks to finish, so this is my first impression. If I can make it to the end without being replaced, then I'll have something to be excited about.
