Any one currently own a Remington Steelmaster 8 or have you ever played one?
Opinions needed both pro and con on playability, sound, flexibily and whether it's adaptable for use with a volume pedal.
Its great appeal is its portability.
Thanks for your input. |

Bill, I have 2 Steelmasters - a D8 I got on eBay and a custom T8 Herb made to my specs. I've played 'em all - Fenders, Gibsons, Rickys, Nationals, Georgeboards etc. - and IMO the Remington Steelmaster is the best there is. It has beautiful full rich tone, great sustain, chimey harmonics, and it's very accurate.
It's suitable for many different styles of music.
I use a Hilton VP with it and that works real well.

Rick:
Thanks for your reply. I guess if anyone should know Herb's guitars, it's got to be you.
That is a gorgeous triple 8 Remington you posted and I have a strong feeling is sounds as good as it looks. Finish looks like a custom job.
I too am planning to use a Hilton infra-red.
Ricky Davis said he uses a volume pedal on every lap non-pedal steel he plays and says it really gives him a good sound menu to choose from.

The good folks at Glidden call that color "Corn Silk". When I was first talking to Herb about the color, I told him I wanted a "cream" color. He strongly advised me to go to the paint store and pick up a chip of the exact color I wanted. That was real good advice, because there are about 100 shades in the general vicinity of "cream". But there was only one shade that was the right one for my guitar, and after I sent Herb the chip he matched it perfectly. These pics show how it shines like a beacon even on a dimly lit stage.
The first two songs I recorded with it are here and here.
The Hilton VP is the way to go alright - it's noiseless and it has no discernable tone loss.[This message was edited by Rick Alexander on 17 April 2005 at 10:30 AM.] |

Well since there is one opinion up there; I'll put another perspective opinion.
I've played them All(including my D10 Remington SteelMaster) and the GEORGBOARD is the best there is; IMO.
The question of Opinions both pro and con on (1)playability> is it plays great and is well designed to do that. (2)Sound> it sounds like a pedal steel guitar. (3) Flexibility> no you can't bend it..ha...Or I guess I don't understand that one?(4)yes adabtable for Volume pedal as any steel guitar is.
Hope that helps from another persons point of View.

Hi Rick, Your Steelmasters pickups appear to be about 4 inches from the center of the pickup to the bridge. Does the Steelmaster have more "BASS" response than a Fender Stringmaster? The Stringmasters 2nd pickup is closer to the bridge than that.

The Steelmaster has a fatter fuller sound than a Stringmaster partly due to pickup placement and partly due to the fact that George Ls are humbucking (dual coil) pickups.
Herb did a lot of experimenting with pickup placement to arrive at what he calls the "honey hole" (or sweet spot).
